Same answer as the pt1-gmanstan: Where is your data showing 70% of the military wants us to pull out of Iraq? Most surveys I have seen reflect about the opposite, many friends, relatives, the NG unit here that has been back a year and scheduled to go again-talking to them no where even close to half say anything like that. Ask them if they would rather be in Iraq or home with family and the huge majority say yes home but ask them if we need to withdraw and leave without finishing the job and the numbers change. The Untied States military always fights for a cause; if you served you would know that the oath does not mention protecting the country or the political leadership but is purely to defend the Constitution-to defend the Constitution we protect the country and we follow the orders of the leadership of the country. In my service I served under the political leadership of Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, the first Bush. If I had stayed a little longer I would have had Clinton. Some I agree with, some I liked, some I disgreed with and some I disliked-under three of those I fought but it really doesn't matter under who becauseI did not fight for them I fought to uphold the oath I took to serve and to protect the Constitution. I had no use for Clinton but if I had still been in I would have served and if necessary fought again-the leader has nothing to do with it. It is not right wing spin that says some of the people opposing the war or President Bush are vehemently and nastily anti-military; look at some of the "questions" posed here by them. I heard some one say no one opposed to the Vietnam Conflict was ever nasty or spit on a veteran-even an "old hippy" from here corrected that persn and I did also because yes it happened and yes it happened to me. Spitting -yes; calling my mother and telling her that they hoped I got killed there because I was a killer and a murderer also happened. "Are all military people criminals, uneducated, dope addicts?" with an add of why else would they... that is a right wing spin or is he a red herring like 9/11 done by the governement to give us an exuse to go to war? Such hatred is there and unfortunately on both sides and this extremism is not healthy or the people or the country.

Ever since Walter Cronkite and Jane Fonda convinced the country to end the Vietnam War, and the draft was ended, there has been a vast anti-military segment of this population that has been allowed to be lippy and betray the very people that keep them free. Look at Cindy Sheehan. Although she lost her podium when the DNC cut her funds off, this country still allows people to say what they want to and not be challenged for it.When Clinton was President he cut defense spending to insanity levels, and hated the military, yet a pile of people still remember him fondly. Take it from me, the liberal press is responsible for all of this. If we were given actual news, the people would see how well things are going in Iraq and how much improvement is made in their people's lives. It won't stop until people remember what keeps this country the way it is. Freedom. And you can't have freedom without consequences, and this is one of them. It's too bad, but it's true. Just keep thanking veterans when you see them, not once, but every time. Give to the USO and the Red Cross, and the Disabled Veterans Associations. At least then you know you are doing what you can to help. And, by the way, 70% of the military does not want out. The previous comment is untrue. Don't believe me? Call a serviceman.

I am a vet. Served from 1972 -1994. I truly appreciate your questions, and agree with what you are saying. What I see is a lot of people talking, and not acting. It is easy to complain but another to come up with a solution. But then, they would have to put down their burger, and get their butts out of their SUVs and do something.
I do believe that our job is done in Iraq. They have done a great job under the most difficult situations. It is now time to come home and put our military on the front lines at home and protect our borders. We have the CIA, FBI, NSA, etc. to keep track of threats to our homeland, and we have the troops to prevent, and react to any threats. We need to start using our assets more wisely, instead of letting them carry the load in Iraq.
Thanks for the support.
As far as the nay sayers go: I have stopped listening to their complaints long ago. I served to preserve their right to talk, and I exercise my right not to listen.

I am a VN vet infantry 68/69. Many joined the military looking for adventure and find that its not what its cracked up to be being lonely and away from home on Christmas. tough they joined and will have to stick it out. In VN were were drafted for the most part and had no choice. It is not right for someone sitting here in the states bitching about the military until they have walked in their shoes. I believe Bush was wrong in going to Iraq but whats done is done and we should support the troops there and get them out asap.

Agreed. As you can tel by my answers I take great exception to those degrading or attempting to humiliate America's heroes. Since retiring from the military I dedicate myself through volunteer work to support of our veterans. I live by a prayer hanging on my wall written by Eleanor Roosevelt. It was a wartime prayer and says:
Dear Lord
Lest I continue
My complacent way,
Help me to remember that somewhere,
Somehow out there
A man died for me today.
As long as there be war,
I then must
Ask and answer
Am I worth dying for?
God Bless America and our troops in harms way.

i am a 10 yr veteran and a vietnam vet of 18 months..i for one was proud to have served my country and to wear my uniform at a time when a war was very un-popular...so i can feel for the present day servicemen and women..no war is really popular..and it doesnt help when you have idiots back in your own country putting you down for serving...like most military personnel..i've had good times and rough times...i was in a hilocopter squadron on a ship that transported bombs to various places in nam..we worked 12 hrs on and 12 off..we did not like hearing or reading about people back home rioting and complaining about how we shouldnt be over in nam..some guys were even afraid to wear their uniforms in fear of being made fun of..i wasnt..i wore my uniform proudly and often..i agree with you..no military...no america...no freedom...

Well said dude. It is the vets that make me proud to be an American. It is only those who have seen the horrors and beauties on the battlefield that can say whether we should pull out or dig in our heels.

Well as you can see by the other answers here, none of those who put down the military have answered this question.
Could it be because they are afraid, can't follow the ?, too damn ignorant!
I think because it requires intelligence, they can't answer.
Guess it's like the draft, those that degrade military service, run and hide

Except for ending slavery, Fascism, Nazism, Communism and protecting freedom, war has never solved anything.
For those who have fought for it, freedom has a flavor that the protected will never taste.
Those that insist on bad mouthing our military don't deserve to be protected. I suggest giving them steel boots and send them out to search for land mines.

The only people that don't support the troupes are in the white house. Why has Ron Paul received more campaign contributions than any other candidate from serving troupes? I'll tell you why, they know for themselves they been wronged.
