ok, I finally got to see the movie, and I dont get why religious people are going crazy about it. (not sure which or how many are)
i guess that goes for harry potter as well, I dont get why you protest these movies. Harry Potter is pure emagination and the golden compass is a clasic story of rebelion against a @sshole power trying to rule everything.
yes i know it was made by an athiest but just about everything in there was action fantasy, a work of total fiction. so why all the seriousness.
last thing, i noticed on Y!A that some religious people said that adam and eve kill god in this. i didnt see any of that, what were they talking about?

those people are out of there minds. when kids watch this movie, they are not thinking anything about god, they are thinking, wow, how cool would that be. everyone knows all of that is fake. you christian people who take this stuff seriously need to go to the mental ward and be locked up for life.

witchcraft is not real magic. magic is not even magic. its ether a trick, or using plants as medicine and so on and so forth. there is no real magic about it. the only magic that is real is as real as god. its all in your mind untill proven otherwise.

I'm not religious, and I love the books, but I think the point is that what is called the Magisterium in the film is called the Church in the books. It basically looks very like the Catholic Church in the middle ages (i.e. during the time of the inquisition).
Later books describe very explicitly how the Authority (i.e. God) is a fraud, and more than imply that much of religion is about controlling people. So I think the worry religious people have is that children will get hooked by this first film and then watch the later films (which will presumably deal with religion more explicitly) and read the books.
Personally, I hope they do. The books promote freedom and critical thinking, as well as the idea that people are morally ambiguous and can't be easily categorised as good or bad. These are rare and good things for a series of children's books.

Most Christians don't feel that way about the movie. A very small extreme sect of Christianity is protesting the movie.
The passion arises from the author claiming "he kills off God" and the author was amazed that Christians were more alarmed at Harry Potter than his books. The killing off God comes in the third book of the Trilogy. Golden Compass is book one.
What the extremists forget are things like.......oh, Shrek, and Cinderella, and Snow White, and the Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, yada yada yada. They all involve "non-Christian" belief, yet they watch them for entertainment. Same rule should apply for Golden Compass. If it looks interesting, watch it. If not, don't.
I'm a fundie. I love movies, especially sci-fi, fantasy, and comedies. I plan to see this over Christmas break.

I think it has something to do with the third book. I also don't get the PG-13 rating. No sex, no cursing and the fight scenes showed little to no blood. most Christians who speek out about such movies and or books do so because they feel that subjects of the secular nature corupt people into believing things that are not Christian and there for BAD.

I am a Christian and we are going to see it today. It looks cool but the reviews are poor. I guess I am mainly going because of the fuss that was made about it. If it wasn't for the christians protesting I probably would of never heard of the movie.

The movie is based on the first of several books. It's the later books in the series that are what Christians are upset about.
The reason Christians are more concerned about movies like Harry Potter and The Golden Compass is they are based on witchcraft.
This is different than movies based on "Fantasy magic."
You can't go to the Library and get books that get you set on "Fantasy Magic." You CAN however get set in witchcraft, and witchcraft is very real, very dangerous and very insidious.

Apparently, the movie was toned down from what is in his books.
One of the major points of producing the movie is to promote his books (i.e. like the Harry Potter movies). So, while the movie is toned down, it enables the author to promote his books which are anti-theistic/anti-God in nature.

I don't know if you know who Edgar Cayce is, but he gave me these words to live by.
(As Christians) don't try to be 'good', but 'good for something'.
If angry Christians put as much time and effort into addressing humanities 'real' problems, then the world would be much more advanced than it is.
With all of the real problems we face, stress, poverty, lonliness, depression, violence, abandonment etc. I have to wonder why they pick on childrens movies.
