The pins and needles sure do sound like you cut off your circulation in your hand because of the way you're sleeping. I have done this act in the past as well. Do you ever get these feelings during the day while awake or is it only upon waking that you get these feelings. If it only happens after your sleep, I would suspect you're cutting off your circulation while sleeping. If you have poorly controlled Diabetes you can get similar symptoms. Or if you have nerve damage. Medications from your doctor will help these last 2 conditions.

I had this same thing. Seriously!
I would wake up and my left hand was numb like it was asleep. If I would shake it long enough the feeling would eventually come back but it was getting worse everyday. It started in two smallest fingers but over time it was my entire hand and I was worried. Doctors only wanted to prescribe pain pills but that didn't do much good.
Eventually I met a chiropractor at the gym and he explained to me that it was because of my posture and because I carried my wallet in my rear pocket. (I'm serious)
Anyway, the long and short is this.
I'm not a doctor but it was some nerve being blocked in my shoulder and the chiropractor worked on my shoulder, fixed the problem and eventually it went away.
OK. I've never really believed in or knew anything about chiropractors but I had this same problem you have described and this guy fixed it.
It took about 2 months at 1 or 2 30 minute sessions a week.

Hope this helps.

hi. I'm an ergonomist so I deal with this kind of thing all the time. Sounds like it could be carpel tunnel syndrome, especially if the tenderness is on your thumb and first 2 fingers. If it is, or if it's any kind of oedema (fluid based swelling) it's better to get it sorted sooner than later. It can get worse, and it's better to know if only to put your mind at ease. For the time being, try eating lots of ginger to open up the capiliaries in the upper limbs (in case it is just retarded circulation). (Ginger tea, root ginger, sugered ginger etc.). Do you work on a lap top? Do you hold your hands above shoulder height very much at work? It can be related to these behaviours (and vibration as someone said) and/or may be hereditary or related to pregnancy. hope this helps.

I had tendonitis in my wrist a few years ago, the dr. asked me if my hands went numb when I slept - said that could be a sign of Carpal Tunnel.

Lately I've been having the same problem as you, but i'm sure it's because of how I've been sleeping - I kind of cross my arms & rest my head on them. I think the top arm cuts off the circulation to the bottom. I agree - it really hurts!!!

Ask your doctor about an exercise routine. Regular exercise, such as walking three times a week, may reduce neuropathy pain, improve your muscle strength and help control blood sugar levels. Gentle routines such as yoga and tai chi might also help.
