Probably not. No matter how much we appreciate the artistry, it has no religious significance for us. But it is a very beautiful work of art, and I was appalled when that nut took a sledge hammer to it. I'm glad it wasn't any worse damaged than it was.

P.S. I read the other answers. Seems several don't even know that you are referring to that marvelous statue by Michelangelo.

So I just read some stuff about it on the web and well... who knows. It's all about art - art is in the eye of the beholder.

I did find this though...

"...The term "pietà" (Latin: pietas) originated from a custom of the Roman Empire around the time of 64 AD, referring to the act of prostrating oneself, and putting forth an "Emotion...of great love accompanied with revering fear....of the [Roman] Gods"...."

So do Catholics understand this like the Romans did - given that they invented it?

Can I appreciate art as much as you do? Probably more, as I majored in art one of my times at college. Can I appreciate the beauty of Mary's expression? Can I appreciate how Michelangelo captured the pain of a mother who has lost her son? Can I appreciate the incredible talent that allowed this man to carve a piece that is so intricate, so delicate, so inspiring? Yes, I believe I can.

You do realise what "atheist" means, right?

EDIT: Dave R (and anybody else who hasn't heard of this): a pieta is a depiction of Mary mourning over the body of Jesus. I'm sure it's very tasteful (especially the ones printed on velvet).
