I'm guessing its to do with the strength requirement of the signal (conventional radio waves can afford to have poor signal strength but Digital waves can't), but does anyone know the answer for sure?

I can think of a good reason and that is that all countries do not have digital radio. We will all loose FM when DAB takes over in 2012. DAB signals will be boosted just like TV.

There's still lots of people out there who believe that with FM you get better quality sound than Digital signals (providing you are close to the transmitter and little to no attenuation occurs), although I think digital is the way to go---

Just thought Id say- because maybe that is 1 reason.

But yeh, i think you are right.

Also, although I am not sure, perhaps the circuitry involved in a digital reciever is more complex than that of an FM reciever- this often plays a big part with manufacturers.

Two reasons
1 cost the circuitry for am radio is simpler.

2 Power as it takes more power to process the digital signal, into an analogue signal.
