Can't they find comfort in the idea that there may not be a god? I am not saying that there is no god, but I am saying that people refuse to accept the possibility that there is no god. It's like a fear, a refusal of the idea that someone may not be watching you all the time, helping you, and saving you in time of trouble.
That's why people continue to invent no religions, right? They finally come to a consensus that the "current" one is outdated and ridiculous, so as time goes by they implicitly and inadverntently create new ones. The ones we have today will be replaced by new ones in a couple of thousand years.
What a waste

Try having a spiritual experience at the very moment that you trusted God. Add to that the fact that you've planned suicide before that, and add to that the spiritual experiences before and after that. What have you got?
What if everyone was telling you that psychic experiences were false, and then you had some psychic experiences? What then? Would it make you look at the people who told you that they didn't exist a little differently?
And so the same with God. You are told by many, many people that He couldn't exist, but you found out that He did, what then? Will you take someone who claims it's not true as being someone with any kind of knowledge about that subject?
Just asking. You can believe in no God if you want. But I have an awful lot telling me you are wrong.

I have a question for you. Why haven't you brought up the people who believe there is NOT a God? Since you are not saying there is or isn't one, you should be equally frustrated that some people are not finding comfort in the idea that there may be a God.
Either way, you're talking about people who have beliefs. People who have faith in their beliefs. They're not going to take comfort in things that they don't believe, either way!
Christians take comfort knowing that there is a God while others take comfort knowing that there is not a God. It's not something either side is capable of proving to the other. They have their faith and each side may have arguments but neither has absolute proof.

The three most difficult things in life to get your sane mind around are...
1. The realization of your own mortality...(religion is the "mental bandaid" for the members of our tribe that would lose all joy in life if they thought that none of this matters to "yourself" after you die...
2. The loss of "childish core beliefs," which for the very first part of your life play a huge role...(some people cling to "God" long after "Santa Clause" got tossed out, because they weren't willing to give up ALL their fantasies and core beliefs even in he face of mature adult common sense, higher eduation, and personal experience...
3. It's big business...All religions are "billion dollar" corporations that make their profit from the gullibility of the masses...and "religion" is the "diamond" of "things that prey and profit from a person's naivete' and gullibility..."

religion is the opiate of the masses. sooner of later a religion or a branch of a religion loses its potency, and the adherent has to progress to a newer, better more effective opiate.
