If your nana get a good picture on her TV now then there should be no problem with a digital TV as most digital TVs have free view built in these days. you wont need any tools just plug in the ariel to the digital TV and away you go.

First of all, I'd like to say what a lovely seaside town you live in, my late dad was a Whitby man. To go onto Freeview, you don't need to wait till Whitby goes digital. This simply means that the analogue signals are going to be switched off, meaning that you will have to move to a digital platform to watch anything at all on your TV. You can choose Freeview, Freesat, Virgin Media, Setanta or Sky to watch your TV, depending on the choice you want and how much you want to spend. Don't forget, after the switchover is completed, you will have to make sure that ALL of your TV's can receive digital programmes, not just your main one.

Can use the same aerial they have now.
you did not mention how they watch TV now, be it cable or satelite or antenna. Satelite and cable you pay extra for more digital channels or you could leave it the same and just not see the improved digital stuff.
Over antenna, the new digital channels are in the UHF band, so those new HD antennas are like the small UHF antennas. My antenna is outside up high because I am 50 miles from the station. It is also an old model that works just fine. If you are closer, a small antenna that sits on top of the table next to the TV might work
don't freeview boxes cost money to buy? and wound'nt they need an antenna too?

The term you are looking for is 'Integrated' with the TV. This means it has the freeview decoder built in
A standard aerial will work, but as said above, you may need a signal booster as some digital signals may be too weak to pick up.
The old analogue picture would still show with weak signals, just be a bit snowy - with digital; if it goes below the threshold you get nothing.

itis complete fallacy digital aerials dont exist nobody makes them only analogue aerials. there is no need in most cases to change your aerial the one already there will be perfectly satisfactory, in some case you may have to get the aerial chaged to on that is stronger ie 18 eleements instead of 10 and replace the down lead but you dont have to buy a digital aerial because none are made it is a con

You don't need a special ariel but if the standard one she has right now hasn't got a strong enough signal it will need moving and maybe a booster buying.

Dont' worry about the Aerial....you don't need a NEW ONE.
You only need Freeview if it isn't Built-in....
So let the saleman know what you need and want, they'll get you set up.....
