There's no reason it should. Christians adopted Pagan Winter holiday traditions (decorating trees, gift-giving, singing, feasting, gathering with friends and family, etc.) without worshiping the Pagan gods they were meant to honor. Why shouldn't atheists do the same?

I once interviewed the first grade students at an elementary school and asked them "Why do people celebrate Christmas?". Out of the whole first grade class (the first grade class was about 150) only one mentioned Jesus. This one shouldn't count because I kept asking her over and over if their were someone other than Santa, Rudolph, etc. whom Christmas might be about. I know these are kids but they reflect what their parents believe and say. I think a lot of people who say they follow Christmas because of Jesus are just lying to themselves. Christmas is a holiday that makes me sad because I don't think it's about Christ at all. I think it's about getting stuff and wanting to conform to what others do for fun. If conformation isn't part of the problem then why does Christmas involve so many pagan customs?

Nope not at all. I am not really a believer but Christmas is about family and presents and time off work and school.

P.S And food.

"auburn" and "Jeremy" already beat me to what I really wanted to say.

But even though I really do not think or even know a whole lot about Christ on Christmas all the atheists still do something special and most of us do know about Christ so we are at least thinking about what happened and why its called Christmas even if its just a little bit.

no, I would rather them celebrate for the gifts and all the wrong reasons (as I see them) then to piss and moan and try to end such a wonderful holiday in witch I choose to celebrate the birth of my Savior Jesus Christ! God has been removed form so many aspects of our lives, school, government, court houses, I am just glad that I still have the right to celebrate as I choose!!

Makes me happy that people are moving away from an immoral religion and converting one of its major festivals (which they stole anyway) into a time for happiness and gifts and food and drink.

merry santa-mas.

The question was most likely posted when Christains and Catholics were not here to answer. So they are all answers from other faiths.

i get what you're trying to get at.
Most people dont celebrate christmas for christ anymore.
It's more about the materials, presents, the gathering, friends..etc.. right?
