Because many can't find a purpose on their own. Non-Christians can and do.

That is a really good question.
So another-wards, people who are Christian have purpose in their lives,
and people that are not Christian....Don't have purpose in their lives.
Very good, your getting it.
God says he has put it into everyman to know him.
So we are all seeking for him.
Their is a God shaped hole in our souls.
Some of us find God and he fills that emptiness inside us. some of us fill that whole with money, sex, drugs, materialism, what ever our little heart desires...
And those people are forever empty in their souls.
This is why you find all these non believing atheist reading questions, pricking & proding over answers that could only be answered from a believers understanding.
You know there is one good thing, even if they never except Christ... They won't be able to use the excuse when they stand before God, that they didn't know about his Gft of Salvation.

I'm sure that many people feel empty thinking about the possibility that we're born, we live, and then we die, with nothing bigger before, during, or after. There are plenty of aspects about religion in general that are very comforting, and very hard to give up once a person experiences that comfort. So yes, I do believe that there are people who follow Christianity (and other religions) simply to give meaning to their lives.

People follow Christianity for all kinds of reasons. Family pressure, family oriented activities, because they think that by doing so they are being 'good', pier pressure, to get welfare from a church, etc.
But to be a true believer, a Christian will not accept any other way. They approach the relationship with God seriously. They cannot get enough of it. They base their entire lives on what the word of God says, and how they think God is directing them.
So there are Christians with religious lives, and yet there are Christians with spiritual lives. They are not the same.

That is a fair question. Have a star.
I think the most fundamental reason is what St. Augustine said, "You have made us for yourself and our hearts find no peace until they rest in you."
Purpose is related to "worth" and "worth" is related to "love". We were made to love and adore our Creator; to walk with Him in the garden in the cool of the day.
Our need for purpose ought to point us to seek God but God Himself is the goal.

I had a significant religious experience about ten years ago. Your question is an insult to those who have had experiences as I have.
