I feel that this site is about the best out there. Some of the other download sites such as FileHippo.com have you download Beta versions for various software by default. DO NOT use Beta versions, as it is usually unstable and can cause your system to crash. All software on this site is 100 percent free and the very latest stable version available. It is updated every day:

I am a computer consultant and get this question all of the time. In researching sites, I found that most include betas, "trial" software. Some (like SourceForge) include thousands of software packages and that is simply too many to evaluate for most users.
In response I put together the Free Software Catalog.
It includes only the best, ready-to-use software and online services around. I personally check out each package to make sure they will provide a practical quality solution. That doesn't mean their bug-free, but they are all free of malware. Most can be installed and put to immediate use as easily as any proprietary, commercial package. I also include server application software and development tools for tech people.
The versions and download links refer to the current stable version of the package and not beta. You should avoid using betas unless you are a beta tester. I also don't include "demo ware" because it's not something you can really use without buying a license.
You can find it here: http://www.free-software-catalog.com/
