It turns out that I was in basic during christmas. We still did normal things in the morning. Woke up at 0445, did breakfast and PT. The afternoon was cut a bit short. We stopped things at about 1600 and watched some movies the rest of the night. Anytime you get a break during basic is welcomed. If thier flight is lucky they may get a patio break and a chance to call home.

Hi my husband left for Lackland on June 3rd 2009 and he called me the following sunday but he read from a script also and told me not to send packages or porn. He never said I couldn't send letters and I have been writing every day! Your friend pprobablyjust misheard. You will also receive a postcard with his address soon if you don't get a call! I got my postcard the next monday! Hope this helps! But don't expect a lot of calls or letters they are kept really busy and even when he was talking to me there was someone behind him telling him to hurry up! I have a friend and her husband joined the army and she didn't hear from him for 3 weeks it depends on his leader. Good luck don't be to discouraged as soon as you get his address send him cheerful letters to give him something to look forward to. I think sundays are the day to hope for a call!

Is he actually stationed there or is he in BMT or Technical School at the time? If he's in BMT yeah...it's a day 'off' pretty much. If he's in Tech School which I doubt, since you'd already know the answer, he'd be coming home for about 10 days? Around there.
And if he was actually STATIONED in Lackland right now, he can do whatever the hell he wants :P

My husband was a marine and was in boot camp on christmas. They got to watch a movie and have a candy cane....it was because some higher up was there though. He said usually they didn't get to do anything on holidays. That's all he told me about it. I know my husband isn't an airmen but maybe this will put your mind at ease. I would like to hope that they go easy on them during christmas and stuff.

If he is just in basic training, Christmas is usually like a Sunday. No duties except the essential ones.

My guess? They take lots of cans of Redi-Whip and hose the inside of an F-15's engine intake manifold; then write the words: "MERRY CHRISTMAS!" on the side of the fuselage. :0)
