Hamas did not recognize Israel and honored by not being recognized by Israel…
And in fact, what ever the Israelis are doing against hamas, it makes hamas stronger and stronger, in 1997, when I was in the university, we made a survey about the percentage of hamas / fatah among the Palestinians, and all the students councils in all the Palestinians universities participated to make the most accurate survey, that time hamas supporters were 9% only, and fatah took more than 60%, and the remaining are Jihad and front liberation parity and some communists.
Now, according to recent surveys, Hamas supporters are more than 73%, and the amazing thing, so many Christians and communists and nonreligious Moslems supporting hamas.

Well, yes and no. Israel recognizes Hamas as a terrorist entity, completely appropriate considering the track record. Should Israel recognize Hamas as a legitimate government? Absolutely not. Hamas is bad both for Israel and for the Palestinians, and playing along with them will accomplish nothing good.

What does "recognize Hamas" mean exactly?
Recognize that they were elected by the Palestinians? Well, Israel does that, and that is precisely the problem. See, Hamas is dedicated to destroying Israel as its own Charter and numerous statements (sometimes daily) make clear. That being the case, Israel has to deal with that reality.

I have no problem with recognizing Hamas.
But in all honesty what will that do?
Until Hamas is willing to negotiate no amount of recognition will matter.
How about this: Israel will recognize Hamas as a legitimate, political group, and the ruling power in Gaza. In return Hamas will declare that it is willing to negotiate a peace settlement with the Israeli goverment, at least in terms of Gaza.

What's happening in Gaza begins with the Hamas election, back at the end of Jan 06. Israel and the United States at once announced that they were going to punish the people of Palestine for voting the wrong way in a free election. And the punishment has been severe.

When hamas puts down their weapons, then we can recognize they are sane. But until the very second they do that, and recognize Israel, they are Islamic extremists who are unrespectable in any way, shape, or form.

Israel has been recognized by the international community as the Jewish state since its founding in 1948.
Not only Hamas, but also Fatah and the PLO and Abu Mazen, refuse to recognize Israel as the Jewish state.
And you ask if Israel should turn the other cheek and recognize this Muslim terror group?
Not on your life.

Have you ever bothered to read the Hamas Charter?
Hamas makes it clear that only the destruction of Israel will suffice. Would you 'recognise' someone who openly said they would only be satisfied with your death?

I think that the asker was confused when he made reference to the sovereign state of Israel as "ersatz."
If anything is indeed ersatz it is the claim that there exists a "Palestinian people."
The reason for the conflict between Israel and the Arabs is that the Arabs, plain and simple, refuse to accept a Jewish state in their midst. They invented this whole idea of a "Palestinian people who deserve a state" just to use as a tool to dismember Israel.
Prior to partition, Palestinian Arabs did not view themselves as having a separate identity. When the First Congress of Muslim-Christian Associations met in Jerusalem in February 1919 to choose Palestinian representatives for the Paris Peace Conference, the following resolution was adopted:
"We consider Palestine as part of Arab Syria, as it has never been separated from it at any time. We are connected with it by national, religious, linguistic, natural, economic and geographical bonds."
"There is no such country as Palestine! 'Palestine' is a term the Zionists invented! There is no Palestine in the Bible. Our country was for centuries part of Syria."
- Auni Bey Abdul-Hadi, a local Arab leader, to the Peel Commission, 1937
