Interestingly, "stigmata" used to be seen on hands. However, it has recently come to light that hands would not support the weight of a body, therefore, those who were crucified must have been nailed through the wrists. If "stigmata" were real, why the discrepancy?

Add to that the fact that there is no historical evidence that Jesus ever existed, and you've got a scam. Nothing more.

A stigmata like effect can come from the bodies reaction to stress brought about by religious Ecstasy. In away it is self-inflicted but not done on purpose. However Theresa Newman's was self-injury and she was completely psycho.

My guess (without researching) is that most or all of them have been self-inflicted. To the extent that it is at least possible that someone could exhibit stigmata that haven't been self-inflicted (by this I mean by biting, scratching, or cutting oneself), then I would say that the "stigmata" phenomenon is as real as hypochondria.

They are real in the sense that people get them, but they are fake in the sense that they are not supernatural. In all recorded cases, a stigmata resulted from intense rubbing of the area or clutching something tightly.

There are more than this.

Whether real or fake, it brings the mind to think upon certain things it perhaps would not have thought of otherwise.

In my case, when I am really spiritually stirred up, I get bad bloody noses for several minutes. Maybe not the same thing, but it has always made me wonder. Only when I am really spiritually stirred up, never any other time.
