The funny thing is a lot of them will claim that Science actually supports a young Earth theory. They are wrong.

Old earth creationists do have a problem. The Hebrew word "yom", indicating a 24 hour day, is the word used in Genesis in regard to the creation days. There is really no ambiguity about it. Either what the Bible says there is correct, or it isn't. I don't see how they can have it both ways.
As to the young earth question, that is far too involved to go into in any satisfying manner here. If you are seriously interested in answers, I would recommend the articles on young-earth creationism found at the following site:

Carbon dating is not reliable. There is a lot of scientific evidence for a young earth. I recommend the book, "Evidence for Creation."
For those who believe in an old earth.... well I think they are just trying to get the Bible to bend to popular opinion, but many will quote that "with the Lord, 1000 years is as a day, and a day as 1000 years" or something like that (there is a verse that says that)/ My question for them, if the days are thousands or millions of years long, how did plants live for millions of years without the benefit of the sun?

The same word that is translated "day" in Genesis and that so many people insist must be a twenty-four hour day is also found in Jeremiah in the phrase "the day of the Lord is at hand". Is it, then, your argument that that means "the twenty-four hour period of the Lord is at hand"?
Edit: Cordell, honey, I never said it wasn't translated right. If you know more than one language, you know that ANY translation is always approximate. That's why you can't base a theology off of a translation without looking into the original languages used.

For the fist piece of evidence that the 6 days were not literal 24 hour days we just have to look at Gen. 2:4 where it now calls all the 6 days 1 day.

Cordell... I believe that creation happened in 6 literal days like the bible says and that the earth is 6000+yrs old. The reason "science" or man says it is older is that carbon dating is not accurate and no one can prove that it is. It has been proved many times to be very unreliable,

I dont think it matters how old we think the earth is. When God was creating the things on earth, He made them mature. Adam was not a little baby when God created him. He was a mature male able to take care of his own direct needs as God provided the means. God made things the age they were so they could be self-sustaining in the present time they were made.

For the 10 millionth time, Genesis itself says the earth was created over many generations "in the day" that God created it. The key is understanding what "in the day" means. The plot thickens.
