I would just buy some fabric and drape behind the subject you are photographing. About two yards should work for most everything, except for larger groups of people.

I bought some fabric from a local fabric store for pretty cheap and it works well. Just remember that if you leave it laying around it can get dirty, and also wrinkly - which is ok, if you want that effect.

Also, for a stand, I would consider buying one of those "instant closets"... the metal ones that have the side braces with the metal (or wooden) dowel runs across the top that you would hang coats or clothes on. Just drape the fabric across that.

For storage, you can buy a rubbermaid container that has a lid.

For a good lens, the 50mm 1.4 is decent. The 85mm F1.8 is also a good lens. The cheapest solution is the 50mm 1.8. Another good approach is a 35-70 zoom, it gives you a 52-105 range on a Nikon, and similar on a Canon crop. If you want the ultimate lens, then the 85mm 1.2 lens is the way to go. I shoot Nikon, and their 84mm F1.4 lens is incredible. It's probably out of your budget for now, but keep an eye out for one, the fast 85mm lens is better than anything else for portraits when you can afford it.
