Cats, like humans, meow when they need/want your attention. My cat Gizmo have had many conversations. I'll talk to her and she'll meow back. No clue what she's saying but I get the point that she wants me to know she loves me and is listening. It's downright eerie sometimes.

Cats communicate via a series of vocalizations combined with body movement. A cat's tale is not only used for balance, it's a very important part of their speech. Watch a cat's tail--the way it twitches when they're annoyed or bounces in the air when they're surprised.

Purring is another form of communication for cats and very important between a mother and her kittens. It is a sound that does not carry too far and therefore does not alert other animals that may be a threat to the kittens. Kittens are able to purr and take milk from their mother at the same time, which communicates to the mother that everything is OK. The mother also purrs to send the same message to her young while they are feeding.

Purring may also be used to communicate peaceful intentions and satisfaction with the present company. If a cat purrs in your presence, then it is saying that it is comfortable to be with you. Purring is also used in a variety of other situations, sometimes even in its moment of death.

If you would like to know more about cat communication then I would highly recommend Catwatching by Desmond Morris. Your public library ought to be able to get hold of a copy. The book answers many frequently asked questions about a cat's behaviour.

BTW, cats DO talk to each other the same way they talk to us. I've seen it.

Cats communicate with each other through body language and scent. They quickly realise that humans communicate using sound, so they learn to meow whenever they want our attention for something.

Actually, that part of cats is really cool. They do it to communicate w/humans. They never do it to communicate to other cats. Watch them; you will never find a cat who communicates w/another cat by meowing at them. It is purely for humans.

Mine is a "Maine Coon" so it is never "Me-ow"! It is more like , "MMMROOOW"! Don't know why! Just Loud and over-bearing! They want, what they want, when "they" want it! And "they" will let you know!
