I know here in the US there are laws about slaughtering. For example if a rancher wants to slaughter a cow he has to contact a butcher shop licensed to do so and have them hang it in the freezer for a certain number of days to age before processing the meat. Inchaallah my husband will be with me in America next year for Eid and we are curious about how the slaughtering of the sheep is handled. Can Muslims who live here in the USA tell me how you handle this situation.

I would contact your local Islamic center. Here, where I currently live, there are Muslim men who are contracted out with farms (some have there own) and they do the slaughtering for us (with us there). There are other farms (from when I lived in another state) and the brothers would go there and buy the lamb and slaughter it themselves. It was lawful over there anyway - does the law change from state to state?

Before Eid the masjids and import food stores will have flyers announcing Eid and whom to contact about getting a sheep, goat, etc. If you just went to some farm yourself and asked the farmer about it you would have to make sure the lamb was fed properly (not fed dead animals etc)...like the time I went when they cut open the stomach grass came out and I was so happy knowing it was fed grass! I just hope they were honest and it was the only thing it had been fed.

What are you doing on Eid, Butterfly? Want to cross the border and spend time with us?

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim

Salaam Alaikum wa Rahmatullah

Well, I think the best advice is to make sure you move to where there is a good Muslim community. First of all, that helps you because you are not isolated among non-Muslims, and second, usually in a Muslim community of any size they will have the procedure in place to allow people to do the proper slaughtering. For instance, I live in VA. We have a brother who has some land out in the country and he brings the sheep and cows to the land for people to buy every year. Professional slaughterers are on hand to take care of the parting out of the meat and there are also braziers available for people to cook meat on site if they want to picnic there (admittedly not so much fun in winter). It's never been a problem for us.

May Allah help you to reunite with your husband as soon as possible, Ameen.

Fi Aman Allah,

We slaughtered in the US every year for 7 years and never had to do anything other than go to the farm and pick our animal. We did have to slaughter it there but we wouldn't want to any other place. It is little different than hanging your deer from a tree in the front yard during hunting season and gutting it right there (yes I am from Wisconsin lol).
The farms we used didn't have to have a butcher shop do anything for them or us. But the meat is also not being processed to sell to the public so that is probably the difference.

Well, you have a few options if you want to slaughter an animal in America. It depends a little on where you live. For example, in New York there are Kosher laws in which you can slaughter your own animal without worrying what anyone says. There are also slaughterhouses where you can do it yourself around Eid.

Many people pay others to do their Qurbani for them. I use Islamic Relief charity, I give them the money, they do the qurbani, and give it to the poor in America

Yes..it is an extremely complicated process. Even in Arab countries one is called upon to do the sacrifice because if the animals gall is accidently cut the entire animal is ruined. It is not something I would try without practice. Check your community someone will be able to share the already slaughtered meat with you. Also it must be done by a man and a skilled one at that.

I do my own slaughtering, for meat as well as sacrifice. I don't know if it violates any animal cruelty laws or anything, though. I figure, if anyone says anything about it, I'll claim it is my constitutional right, as a part of my religion.

You may contact the local halal meat market, they normally organize this at some ranch. You can slaughter on your own and there is no waiting time to get the meat. They give it to you immediately. have done this on the west coast.

Asalam alaykum,

My fil in Saudi slaughtered two sheeps for us since were in America and its harder for us to just go and do it. I do know that my friends in TN went to a farm where they bought some sheep and slaughtered them theirselves. So I think you can, they did.
