By leaving it alone so its mother will not push it away or worse not care for it. When you handle a newborn animal..you put your scent on it. The mother senses some different about the New baby and either ignores it, pushes it away or stops caring for it altogether. I know you want to play and hold this new baby..but if you just gaze at it but don't handle it..you will ensure that the new kitten is not singled out or ends up with problems. So..enjoy your newborn kitten but until it is at least 5 weeks old..don't handle it or separate it from its Mom for any amount of time.
Congrats..

Handle your kitten as often as possible. Be gentle and stroke your new kitten in the same way its mother would clean it. It helps with digestion as well as fosters a sense of safety and security. Kittens are curious little creatures and so playing with your kitten will help to socialize it.
But Beware: once kitty starts to play, you will have to take care to keep things like bathroom doors closed or else it will discover the toilet paper and unravel all of it before attacking it.

first of congrats!! just speak softly, handle it gently, and don't mess with it too much. If you do, the mom will feel insecure and move the litter to a place she feels safe, usually one you don't know about. Before you go near the kittens though, my advise would be to watch the mom. As you get closer she may become uncomfortable, so just let her ease into the fact that you won't take them away before you really get to know them. Congrats again and good luck!!

first of all..congratulations..your kitten is lucky enough to have you..event though i'm not an animal lover..i know for a fact that animals love a person if that person shows how he cares and how important the pet is to him..just be on your kitty's side..don't let her cry all the time..give her food..and cuddle her with all your love..goodluck!!

Make sure her mama feeds her until she is old enough to ween. Hold her and pet her, but not so much that the mama cat begins to ignore her.

Kittens need to be near their Momma cat right now....when they are older...they need to be held close.
