If I may, more often than not the problem will not be solved by getting rid of one and changing to an earlier version.
Chances are better than good that the problem you are having is fromsluggish performance and slowing down the cause is from Mal-ware, Spyware and may be even a trojan or a virus.
Here are a couple of tips for you.
1st Always keep your Software Up to date from the Manufactures site as well as Microsoft.
2nd It is imparitive to have one form or another of Up to date Virus Software.
3rd I also find it a big plus to run Disk Clean-up, as well as Running Spybot's Search and Destroy. Lavasofts Adaware-2007 ( These both can be downloaded free from Googleing them.
Lastly I use the Tools located in the menu bar on IE. Scroll to the bottom and select Internet Options, and then delete all of the extra junk, Cookies, Online and Offline Content as well as History's etc.
By preforming these steps once a week need to or not you will find a marked preformance boost as well as smoother operation of your machine.

Add/Remove Programs should un-install IE7 (rolling it back to IE6). Add/Remove Windows Components will not even show IE as an option.

Hope this helps
