I was that soldier but not making a fortune.
Paid the bills, kept a roof from leaking, etc plus a few luxuries now and then.
It ain't easy!

I have. But I wouldn't advise anyone in any field to depend on one thing for all their income. It's better to diversify. It's called "not putting all your eggs into one basket."

You could be the greatest new and upcoming photographer in the world and have an accident which cause you to lose your eyesight and then what would you do? As you make money in any field, be it Doctor, Engineer, Lawyer, Contractor, Photographer, you should take a portion of it and invest in a safe shelter of some sort. For me it was real estate and a couple of other small businesses which have done pretty well.

I also reached a point very early in photography where I realized I didn't like shooting weddings, children, and the ordinary. So I worked hard to develop some other incomes which would allow me more freedom to choose what I wanted to shoot.

The last thing I would have ever wanted to do would have been to work for someone else shooting "mart" type photos of screaming kids with mothers who looked at you to console them. I'd be a ditch digger before I would do that.

But to each their own. I'm just saying what my personal preferences were.

Yes, several. I've worked for a studio photographer, and at a camera store. I met the most pros at the store. Several came in every day for film or equipment, or sometimes to display their work on the walls with their business card. I enjoyed both jobs, because I love working with the public, but I've barely made over $100 on my own photography. Honestly, I don't really try.

No, not me. The photographers I know do photography as a side job. The money is pretty good, though.

Yes, I have a colleague in the USA who is a most brilliant surrealist photographer.
Works in B&W, I have an entire series of enormous poster sized prints of his work which he sent me as a gift, lucky me. Breathtaking stuff.

I met a guy recently while visiting friends from college. He started out as a hobbyist and now he is making his living as a portrait photographer. If he can do it, you can too.

Yes, myself. It was tough getting to this point but well worth it when you do what you love. It's also my hobby!
