Not sure what you mean by "conventional" but I'll assume that you mean a total hip replacement using a metal/poly or ceramic bearing. And when you say "the new metal on metal" I assume you are referring to a different procedure called hip resurfacing.

I've had two total hip replacements and they work just fine. I couldn't walk before the surgeries and now I can walk miles, need no pain meds, have no limp and pretty much do what I need to.

Resurfacing is relatively new in the US because only recently has the device been approved by FDA. It has been performed abroad for years. The device used has a metal on metal bearing (very large because the head of the femur is capped instead of cut off as is done with hip replacement. There are still some who have issues with the metal debris that may be generated by this bearing and it's effect on the body. You will find that it is still somewhat controversial in the orthopedic world - it has both avid proponents and equally avid detractors.

In contrast, total hip replacement surgery has become one of the most successful procedures performed today in terms of how it relieves pain and restores function in people who would otherwise end up leading a wheelchair-bound existence.

I had the conventional kind a year ago and I can promise you I will NEVER have another of either kind!! This one doesn't work; the pain is over the top; yet the surgeon says it's just fine! If it were I could walk. I walked into the hospital and I haven't walked since.
