CISM's are one way
(Critical incident stress management)
It is like a peer group where you go and talk about what happened, becuase talking about it helps a lot.
Lots of cops and paramedics crack inappropriate jokes or attempt to distance themselves emotionally from the scene. Eventually everyone gains their own specific way of coping.
Also, in the academy, we had a full day dedicated to stress management and the best thing i got out of it was to preform physical activity(running is the best), and utilize the programs set up by the agency you work for.

If you take every horrific accident scene home with your going to have a long career. Theres no special training for sights of horrific scenes. You just have to be thick skinned, and treat it as business. If you take it personal, you'll never last.
Business is Business!!!!

Depends on the size of the department. Some of the larger departments require the employees to attend their in staff counseling, others have it available. EMT's, police and fire depts see a lot of "bad" things, but sometimes we don't have time to mourn the loss of another human beacuse our job requires us to go to the next call. We have to be strong, the citizens we serve and protect depends on our ability act quickly. Im afraid that is no school, just on the job training Im afraid.

They either do or they get out. The hard part about it not the dealing with the immediate situation, it's afterwards. There are usually programs in place to help handle the psychological trauma.
