I was 3 years old, and it was a Poodle mix named Dixie.
She was white and had the curly hair of a Poodle, but she had the face of a Terrier, and her body was a little long like a Dachshund. All my parents knew was that he mother was a toy Poodle.
I can still remember her waking me up in the morning, by jumping on my bed and licking my face. Sometimes she would wake me up too early, so my mom closed my door so Dixie couldn't wake me up anymore, but that didn't work either because Dixie would scratch my door and cry, so my dad told my mom that Dixie should sleep on the bed with me so Dixie maybe Dixie would stay asleep until I woke up by myself.
It worked. I guess Dixie didn't like to wake up alone, and maybe she just went back to sleep when she was on the bed with me.

It was way back in 1957 when I was 15 years old. My dad would never let us have a dog because he said we would not take care of it. He was probably right when we were younger. We had a neighbor that had a pup to give away because the mother would not nurse him any more because he was bitting her. But through a bit of skulduggery we managed to get the pup. My dad was in the hospital after major surgery when we asked him if we could have the puppy. Maybe it was the drugs but he said OK.
He was a little black and white terrier mix we named Deacon. We got a big box and some blankets for him in the garage. With winter coming on my dad said it is too cold in the garage so Deacon could stay in the house for the winter. He slept in my dads chair in the living room. Guess what, that pup never spent another night outside.
My mom said the dog was always under foot all day until about 3:00, about the time I got home from school, then he would head for the front window and watch for me. We always went for a walk then. I would put his leash on and walk around to behind where we lived to some large open fields and turn him loose so he could run.
When I turned 17 I was off to the Navy. When ever I was able to come home on leave Deacon was right there wanting to go for a walk.
When I got out of the Navy, moved away, got married and started my own family Deacon stayed with my mom. He was always there when we came to visit. He lived to over 17 years and it was a really sad day when he passed away in his sleep.
I hate your question and don't know why I answered it, not really. But now I am sitting here all choked up with a tears in my eyes. You never forget your first love.

I was under two. She was a mutt, but looked like a smaller version of a German Shepherd (about 35 pounds). My favorite memory is one Christmas I was worn out. I fell asleep with my head on her stomach for about 4 hours. When I woke up she had not moved. She was an extremely loyal dog. To this day I still consider her the best animal I have ever had and I have had a few. Now, I have 2 dogs and 6 cats.

The moment I was born, I already had a dog! She was a shepherd/Irish wolfhound mix...and I loved her very much. My parents had gotten her while they were expecting me, because their malamute had recently passed away.
She passed away when I was in 5th grade...I still have a picture of her in a frame. Other than that, the only other thing I have to remember my time with her is the tiny circular scar on my left hand. No one ever told me that you shouldn't stick your hand in a puppy's mouth (and I was only a baby at the time too)! Oh well, she didn't bite me hard or anything, just enough of a single tooth penetration that it has left a scar to this day. I actually don't mind it, because I still miss her from time to time, and it helps to remind me of her! =)

I remember only by picture a Great Dane that we had who's name was Buster.
My most memorable first dog was Lady Bug. A full blooded small beagle, actually she found me and my mom when we walked to the store and I was 2 yrs. old. She was just absolutely perfect!!! Protective and only barked when strangers came around the house, raised hair on back when someone creepy walked down the sidewalk and was one heck of a hunting dog to boot.
Now I have a GSD & Beagle and the Beagle is the boss.

I was born into a home of dogs. Pekes to be exact. My mom's favorite was "tuffy" a nasty, yappy little nipper that hated me. He bit me often. And I deserved it. He died when I was 12. He was 15. I also remember Bubbles, Pepper, Cricket, Baby, Jojo, and others. I loved Jojo. He was a beautiful copper red one. He actually liked me. He died from Parvo when the virus first came out before there was a vaccine. I sobbed over that little boy.

I was 5. She was a border collie named Panda...black/white thing...what do you expect from a 5 year old. We ended up with Panda, Lassie, Moochie, and Lady before all was said and done in that house. That was just the beginning...the list goes on. I wouldn't want to be without a dog...at least one.

I was 7 or 8. She was a black cocker spaniel that we got at the humane society. She had been very abused as she'd crouch down in fear when you went to pet her but she got better although she was never very affectionate she was a good dog. She died a couple years ago when I was away at college.

I was 15. It was a poodle named LuLu. She was a very good companion. She also had epilepsy. Which wasn't fun at all. She was 8 years (human) old when my parents had to put her down. I cried and cried and I had been married for a year!
