Take a look at the Blue Book of Used Gun Values. My 2007 copy shows 1940 95% at $550.00.

You might get that from an eager collector. Someone who is interested in it only for hunting is unlikely to pay that much.

You could get lucky in a big gun auction and get even more. See if Butterfield's has one coming up.

Consider consignment at a store but don't pay over 15%.

Take a look at gunbroker.com and auctionarms.com. I think that gunbroker extends the auction by 15 minutes every time there is another bid. It's a very good seller site but not so great for buyers unless you have a lot of time.

Be sure you pay attention to all pertainent laws. You can sell it but it will require licensed dealer to dealer transfer if you sell it out-of-state, or if your state does not permit direct transfer between private parties or has a waiting period for long-guns.

I paid $300. about 3 years ago for a plain-Jane 1950 manufacture 1894 .30-30. Of course, that was before Winchester closed it's doors. I don't know, ask six for it and see what happens.

Good luck.

Every time a manufactiurer goes out of business, the value of their products go up. If it is in excellent condition, you may be able to get $500. I hope it is in the popular 30-30 claiber, and not the unpopular .32 Winchester Spl. caliber.
