The special affects were great. The animals (demons) were totally awesome.

Because the nitwits are STILL unable to tell truth from fiction.

They get it all mixed up. Ya know, they tend to believe anything.....like the bible...so, they get their knickers all twisted about some fictional movie based on a fiction book written by a person from his imagination, with fictional characters and fictional events.

They can't tell the difference.....

Poor souls!

I haven't seen it yet, but I plan to because I like fantasy movies, not because of the hype.

The movie is based on the first in a series of books. In the final book, the evil authority figure is killed off. Now many people are saying that this authority figure is suppose to be God. I haven't read the book, or seen the movie so I can't say whether or not this is true, but if it is, I can see how the death of God in a movie could ruffle some feathers.

Some people are also offended by it because the author of the book is an atheist. I saw a TV review of the movie and the reporter said that the author was 'a known atheist' and spat the words out in much the same way as 'a known pedophile' or 'a known axe murderer' lol.

It's also been said, although once again I'm not sure if this is true, that the organisation depicted in a negative fashion in the movie/book represents the Catholic church, so that's ticked a few people off. Some Catholic organisations are calling for it to be boycotted.

All in all, I think people have been too sensitive over it. It's the Da Vinci code all over again. Only a nitwit would take a fantasy movie as fact and only someone weak in faith would be swayed by it...

I don't think any Christian fears The Golden Compass! I know I do not! The reason we are upset over the movie is because the writer wrote books about killing God! The movie is way toned down from my understanding. So I really don't have a problem with the movie itself but will not support a work of fiction that is so blatant in it's hatred of God!

the golden compass represents knowledge and truth... the idea of the magesterium... is that religion blinds people and wants to control them... the golden compass represents "truth" meaning thinking for yourself looking for knowledge. ...the author's big issue w christianity is that he thinks that christians shove there beliefs down their childrens throat and dont have a chance to beleive anything else...the compass is the knowledge and the power to see past what people tell u.....

i hope that helps u out a bit.. .no1 else seeemed to even try to answer ur question.. just tlk about the movie..

im not anti christian either im just telling u what the compass represented...

its all symbolism....

It is because the Author has stated in interviews that he wrote the books to teach kids to hate organized religion.

That and the fact that his use of magisterium is a specific jab at the Catholic Church. The teaching/ruling body of the Catholic Church is called the magisterium.

Oh, and it's not just 'fundies', Catholics are the heaviest boycotter and the word fundie refers to fundamentalist Protestants.

Hey S you know as well as I do it has always just been a lot of hype in fact thinking about it what better way to get people to see the movie than to start some fanatic jacka** on a spree by telling him it is all about killing god ! Think of all the free advertising they got ! Great press I hope the Christians appreciate the humor as much as I do !

Because it portrays organised religion as being bad, has 'demons' (daemons in the original books... which are 'spirits' not demons. gah!) and in the other two books they set out to kill an ancient angel who claims to be the creator, even though he isn't, who is trying to stamp out free will.

Because it was poor cinema at best, pretty though. I liked the Art Neuvoue styling, but the pacing was awful.

It's anti-authoritarian. In a later book (spoiler alert).....

They "kill" god. Except it's not really god and never was. And the author is an atheist. But this movie had nothing in it about the killing god part.

Yeah, I didn't get their freakout either.
