You wrote, 'No heterosexual man would defend a gay from a gang of angry homophobes.'
I am heterosexual and a Viet Nam era veteran, and I hope I am a better man than that. And I hope YOU are a better man than that.
Yes, gays should be allowed to serve as should women. However I have long believed that the military needs to develop some new ethical standards now that it isn't solely made up of heterosexual males.
I think it should be considered the moral equivalent of incest to have sexual relations with someone in you own unit. The reason is, romantic emotions CAN adversely affect morale and combat readiness and rigorous written (and more importantly, unwritten rules) should be put into place to make sure that a unit can perform effectively in a time of crisis.

An openly gay person should not be allowed in the military and here's why. The "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy was enacted under President Clinton. The policy does not ban gays from service but it does ban homosexual activity. A gay member can serve while being secretly homosexual. Here is the problem when openly gay members serve with strait members.
The day gay members are allowed to serve openly I want to be able to go to the ladies locker room with a bucket of popcorn and watch the show. It's the same thing right? Gay men are attracted to men. Gay women are attracted to women. So I, as a heterosexual man should be legally allowed to sit next to a gay woman and compare the girls in the shower right? It's the same thing.

Touchy subject, seeing as we've got "don't ask, don't tell" in place. But really, how can you PREVENT someone from signing up for the military if they want to? We had the problem before and instead of finding a GOOD solution, we just decided to keep things "hush hush" and let things like brutality to those that are homosexual or even different continue to happen. The real question is, should we let those that would prey on gays in the military? Why aren't we asking that? Aren't THEY the ones doing the harm here, after all? Just a thought- just something to ponder.

I have no problem with homosexuals. It's just that when you are forced to shower with someone that may or may not be atracted to you well, that's violating your rights. I as a woman would not be allowed to shower with a heterosexual man in basic and nor would i want to so i think that the only other solution to the don't ask don't tell policy would be to seperate homosexuals from heterosexuals in the way that heterosexual men and women are seperated. And that would be more discriminating than to just have a don't ask don't tell policy, at least in my opinion.

"Should gays be allowed in the military? "
Yes, as they actually are allowed in. I believe the intention of the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy is to protect those people. You never know who is going to lash out at a homosexual once they've enlisted already.
There are guys that get beat up brutally in basic training in the middle of the night, only because they keep getting everyone smoked and messing up the team. And the drill sgts, if they even *know* about it, don't normally do anything about it.
That policy protects homosexuals...

In case you didn't know, gays have been in the military of all countries for YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS. Some of the world's greatest military leaders have been homosexuals...a fact that you seem to have missed.
It must have made you losers really proud to gang up on ONE person. Made you fell like a 'REAL MAN'? Did you brag about BEATING UP THE HOMO? Must have made mom really proud of you. Oh, you didn't tell her? Why not? You mean mom would have been ASHAMED of you ganging up on ONE PERSON? Did your 'blanket party' change the guy? Or did he learn to hate people like you?
I've been stationed with gays. They were top of the line performers, compared to some of the no load 'straights' I've dealt with in my 20 years in the Navy.
Pathetic pieces of dog droppings is MY opinion of you and your kind.
Your Y/A name is FLUFFY? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Are YOU the one who got beat up?

I worked with people in the military that I knew were gay. They did not press the issue. I counted on them with my life and them with mine.
I am a rightwing type of guy but I actually agree with Bill Clinton and his don't ask don't tell policy. As long as you do not make it my business I will not make it my business.
I think that is good advice for most things, not just sexuality.
