Well, it depends on what type of depression you have. Are you severely clinically depressed? Are you manic-depressed? Are you very sad and have the blues? Do you have post partum depression? These types of depression would be addressed in different ways. But, all can benefit from certain life-style changes. For instance, exercise is an immediate upper. It releases endorphins - which are the 'feel good' hormones. It also relaxes tension and soothes nerves. Omega 3 oils have been proven to help mild depression. Keep yourself connected to other people. In other words, do not isolate. This is important. When isolation occurs, usually sleeping or staying in bed follows. This is not mentally healthy. Your best bet if the above does not alleviate your symptoms, however, is to see a doctor (psychiatrist) and get a definitive diagnosis. The doc will then suggest therapy, offer advice on your problems, or prescribe medication. That is the route I would take. Why suffer when it is unnecessary? I would seek help from a professional.

about 5 years ago, I started to fall into a really depressive episode. At first I thought it was only because I had a bad break from a relationship but the feelings wouldn't go away even after I got a new girlfriend. It was wrecking my life until a point where it was seriously affecting my work and personal life.

She was very worried but at the same time couldn't understand why I was still sad and thought that I still couldn't let go of my previous relationship. Being the wonderful person that she is, she put aside her feelings and suggested I go for psychiatric evaluation. Many months later and even more anti-depressants, I was not coming close to being better at all.

After doing some research online, I found out the real cause as you described it really makes a lot of sense and purchased this program. The results were simply astonishing. I read this book over three times and put all words in action. Using this method, I've kept my depression at bay ever since. Up to date I'm still living happily with my girlfriend.

This is an excellent question. Depending on the severity of symptoms you have, there are several ways to manage it. If you have major depressive disorder and have not eaten in days, sleep 20 or more hours a day, and have persistent thoughts of suicide- then medication is almost necessary, at least to get you back on your feet. For less severe cases, here are a few suggestions:

Try to eat: a common symptom is a loss of appetite, however, not eating is like not giving your body the nutrients to heal your mind.

Try to exercise: whether is a few sit-ups everyday, or running a mile- increased heart rate effects the serotonin in your brain in the same way as some antidepressants!

Find support- especially if you have occasional suicidal thoughts, its important that you find people who you trust and care about to talk to. A therapist is also a good resource.

Journal- keeping a journal of your feelings is a good way to release negative thoughts. Also, try to remember when these depressive feelings started, and what was going on in your life that may have initiated them. Remember the times you've overcome difficult problems in your life- I'm sure you've done it before, you can do it again.

Hope that helps. If you ever consider suicide, you have to talk to someone first. I guarantee there are people in your life who care, whether they appear to or not. Good luck, Take Care Dr. Max S.

Prozac and Paxal are only masking drugs for depression. The truth is that depression is a sympton of other things, it isn't the real problem. Sitting down and talking to a trained counselor who can help you discover why you are depressed is the answer. Until you find the reason or reasons for depression and solve them, it will stay around, no matter how much Prozac you take. I suggest a counselor who is not interested in medicating you, but who is interested in helping you get to the bottom of the things that are depressing you.

Some people can manage their depression, and others cannot. It all depends on the CAUSE of your depression.

People do benefit from the coaching they receive from a Counselor/ Therapist. You will discuss parts of your life that are not working for you -- where you are stuck -- how to get unstuck.

You will also learn how to pattern and structure your days and nights, your nutrition, your sleep, and your exercise in order to regain your mental and emotional health.

Some people experiencing depression will gain the help they need from their family Dr. Blood tests can determine if there is anemia (low iron) or thyroid malfunction. Either of these can fuel depressed mood and slow body.

So, see your Dr. and get checked-out, then participate in a number of sessions with a Counselor / Therapist. Then work on it for yourself.

I am guessing you don't want to take ANY medications for depression?? there are things out there that can help, try therapy for one, there are many alternative ways but medication and therapy is like one of the highest successful ways to treat it. but exercising does help a little, because it raised the endrophines and stuff and makes you feel good. bt if you are depressed and I am someone with experience with depression, severe depression that is, who wants to exercise??

two- stay away from alcohol, and street drugs. it is a depressant and will in the end only make you feel worse, even if you can "escape" as I saw it when I was in college as a way to get away from my feelings, (I didn't know that I suffered from depression just thought that I was just messed up and a failure... didn't know about it back then)

mediation and prayer help some, listening to music that lifts the spirit up is always helpful too.... I have a list if you want to know more...

See depression treatments, at ezy-build *(below) in section 2, and consult a doctor, to eliminate thyroid problems, etc. as possible contributing factors: also seek a referral to a therapist using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy. It is your decision, and yours alone, as to whether to take any antidepressants offered, but, before you do, read section 1, and check medications out at www.drugs.com so you will be on the lookout for side effects, like sexual dysfunction. My strong recommendation, however, is to follow the advice of my doctor, his associate, and also Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN NP, and Dr. Mercola, as well, at http://www.mercola.com and avoid antidepressants (pages 2V, and 2Z refer, & antidepressant websites: page 2). The reasons why we all share the same view on this are explained in full, as you will find, if you read the whole section. All of their advice, (except prayer, because many people are not religious) I have incorporated into the "core treatments", including others as options, such as herbal remedies, Inositol, or SAMe. If you are diagnosed with clinical (major) depression, antidepressants may be necessary for a while, which will give the treatments time to become effective. The antidepressants themselves need at least several days, or even many weeks to become effective. It's a good idea to taper off them slowly, with medical advice, after several months, say, to a couple of years, at most, because they are only effective in the long term for about 30% of people. Because of this, you would be well advised to begin the treatments immediately, and maintain them. I'd just thank your mental health care provider, and pocket the prescription, trying the treatments for a few months, to see if they are sufficient for you, before considering filling it (unless clinically depressed, and having great difficulty functioning, or suicidal, in which case I'd take them). If the amount of daylight you have been exposed to recently has reduced, perhaps due to the change of seasons, see Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) in section 2, at * http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris and, instead of taking 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily; replace 2 of them with cod liver oil supplements (or a teaspoonful of cod liver oil), for the winter months only! Consider having your doctor test your vitamin D levels.

Tom Cruise told Matt Lauer that vitamins and exercise will suffice. Psychologists support the idea. Repetitive exercise increases the neurotransmitter serotonin which is at low levels in a depressed brain.
