16" guns are the largest allowed on a warship by international treaty. The only US ships with 16" guns were the Iowa Class Battle Ship. The shell weighs almost 2000 pounds, so yes it is like throwing a Volkswagen 18 miles with pin point accuracy. When firing a single guns on the ship, the ship will move in the opposite direction of the shell. The more shells fired the faster the ship moves sideways. There is an alarm sounded before firing to warn all men to be ready for firing. If you were standing on the deck by the guns one you would be deaf and two you would be throw overboard. If you were on the other side of the ship when the guns went off you would be slammed into the bulkhead and pretty well messed up.

That would be true. Firing the main guns on an Iowa Class Battleship required securing the decks.

I can tell you that a general was in a regular SUV in Iraq riding with armored vehicles and they met some enemy and the US M-1 tank in front of the SUV decided to return fire at the enemy, the shock wave broke the front window of the SUV!!

These battle ship guns are truly awesome I heard they send an explosive shell the weight of a small car, I don't think you want to be anywhere near that thing when they fire it!!

I am not sure, but my guess is that the decks would probably be cleared when those big mothers were being fired. Some of the squids (no insult intended) that post here probably know for sure. I'm a jarhead, and spent my fleet time on a carrier.
