I know that recently I've been put on some medications to help make this not happen but sometimes I start freaking out. There's usually a reason but I never know how to calm myself down fast enough.

when you become anxious you breathe more rapidly and your blood becomes oxygen saturated.
the best and quickest way to calm down is to put a paper or plastic bag over your mouth and nose and try to breathe normally. as the co2 level rises you will start to feel better.
i had the same problem years ago and could find no reason for the panic attacks. i was cured by a hypnotist in one session. good luck.

Have you seen the techniques for control of panic attacks, in section 8, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris yet? If you're sick of being told to breathe, begin by holding your breath for 5, or 10 seconds: this will give you the confidence to realise that YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR BREATHING, but not pass out, or die (your autonomic nervous system resumes breathing, if unconscious). Understand panic attacks, and what triggers them, in your life (if it is unresolved anxiety, see section 6). The paper bag method works for most people: have you tried it? If you are fairly suggestible, the following are reliable, and reasonably priced:

Your last alternative is psychotherapy, to address its fundamental cause: read section 1, and examine the 1-800-therapist website, and use the locators, and phone book. I used to suffer from panic attacks, until I questioned what had changed recently in my life, to trigger them? I suggest that you learn, then practise the controlled breathing technique, until competant, then employ it, at the very first sign of a panic attack.

I can only really completely stop panicking if I get away from where I am and sit alone for a minute or two. But when that is not immediately possible I just close my eyes and keep telling myself "You're almost done here, you're going to move in a minute and you never have to come back here again. In one minute you're going to be fine, everyone will leave." But, maybe that would only help me? I just freak out when I am around lots of people. But try to just focus on your breathing, nothing else. Just keep thinking in, out, in out. Try to take long, slow deliberate breathes.

I have had panic attacks for several years now. I use to use the meds they gave me, but have learned to talk myself out of them. I always take a deep breath and realize, that if I am able to take that deep breath....I am ok, and slowly work yourself down. There isn't a quick way. I try to rationalize the whole thing. It typically takes a few minutes, but it will work.

Depends on why you are having a sudden rush of panic.
But breathing a lot of air helps. The oxygen that you inhale helps you calm down by counter- acting against the chemicals that are released into your bloodstream that gives you the panic.

Breathe! Woo- sah. :]

I never do, it always hits. But if you straw-breathe, tense up your muscles for periods of time, and spin on a spinny chair, then you'll be ready for your panic attack. I dunno how to cure them, but as long as you remain physically comfortable then it won't get out of control. I guess the technique I described helps 78% of people who try it, and they're not bothered by their attacks anymore and they are also not noticed by other people.

Find a quiet place, and a comfortable position. Your whole body should be supported, so try a chair or a sofa. Loosen any tight clothes, remove your watch, shoes and glasses. Take two, or three deep breaths and as you are breathing out, imagine the muscle tension going away. Clencth ur fists, and hold for 10 seconds. Then enjoy the relaxation for 10-20 seconds. Tense your arms, tightening ur bicepts and tricepts, hold for 10 seconds, sand then relax for 10-20 seconds. Raise your eye brows and tense ur forehead muscles for 10-20 seconds and then let go. Tighten your neck muscles, hold, and then let go. As for mental thinking, dont say anyhting like 'im having an heart attack' or anyhting. It is not, and it is just a panic attack. Grab a bag and slowly start inhaling in and breathing out. Hope this helps! Jess (good luck)
