I live near Albany, NY.... if you were going to BENNINGTON VERMONT, that's only about 40 minutes from Albany and Albany is 3 HOURS from NYC (depending on road conditions and TRAFFIC)---it can take up to 5 hours just for the trip from NYC to Albany IF roads are bad or traffic is all backed up... I drive to NYC all the time... Ok If you plan on going up to Burlington, the person who said 4 hours is either a SPEED RACER or has NEVER driven that distance.... Burlington is on the other side of Lake Champlain and should take you a good 5 and 1/2 or MORE hours---again depending on road conditions and traffic.... Going Interstate 87 up to Albany and cutting over Route 67 EAST outside of Mechanicville (exit 11 of Interstate 87)...is the best way to get to Bennington... Burlington is best going up through Plattsburgh on I-87 (I believe it's exit 39 or 40--I have driven it but can't remember the exit number)... and going by ferry over Lake Champlain into Burlington... KILLINGTON VT (a great ski resort)----is EAST of Albany on the way towards New Hampshire.....I've driven from Albany to Killington and that takes about 2 hours....

Vermont Transit Bus System actually has some great direct service between NYC and Vermont for reasonable fares. Avoid the drive, the route can be very congested and the weather not so good at this time of year.

I used to do Wilmington to the Whitestone via Brattleboro ,Hartford and Danbury in a pretty consistent 4.5 hours
I agree there is no way in H that Burlington happens in 5 hours
Most people doing that would would probably take the Northway to Glens Falls then over to Rutland and up Rt 7 to Burlington and there is simply no fast way to do that stretch in any time of year

Took me about 6 hours with the stops in between. When you drive through there, it's like nothing but farm country and mountains, if your going to Burlington. Very beautiful to see. We visited Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream factory. Yum. If your going towards that direction, the Inn at Essex is a culinary school resort, great food! It's a good deal with a package deal, you can book online.

I came up with 11 hours and 632 miles. The BEST route is... Rte 4 to I87 I87 to I287 I287 from Suffern to the Jersey Turnpike Jersey Turpike into Delaware US13 south to Virginia Beach. I287 is a few more miles but it avoids the dreaded Garden State Parkway. A good place to stop for lunch or dinner is Harrigan's in Montville NJ which is about a half mile off I287 at Exit 47. This is an Irish style pub. The food is great and its family friendly. Its about 4 hours from Chittenden. Stay on the Jersey Twpk. to avoid Phily traffic. Drive through Delaware and take the bridge/tunnel to avoid DC traffic. For the roundtrip you'll need about $200 for gas, $60 for tolls.
