I am a Roman Catholic teen, but for the past few months, I have been questioning whether to believe or not. What if Mother Mary, mother of Jesus, made up the whole story that some angels came up to her and said that she was pregant with the messaih Jesus, to avoid being stoned or killed for having sex and becoming pregnant without being married. What if the Roman Catholic faith is based on one huge lie?

What if it was a story already told in previous religions and Christians just stole it like pretty much everything else in their religion?

Hardly anything in Christianity is original.

I guess you'd have to consider the culture of the time, then, right?

What was it like in the 1st century B.C., living in Israel? How likely is it that Mary would have been alone with a male who was not a family member? Unmarried women tended to be very well guarded.

Also consider that Joseph could NOT have been the father. Why? Because Celsus was writing in the 2nd century A.D. that it was a Roman soldier who fathered Jesus, and Mary was a whore. Why would he write that, unless the opposite was held to be true? Everything he wrote about Christianity was an attempt to denigrate it somehow.

We can't prove it to be true. However, there is circumstantial evidence. And if that's enough for some court cases in which "hard" evidence is absent, then it should be enough for our faith, right?

She could not be stoned for the reasons you indicate, but just the opposite. No one would believe she was pregnant without having sex with a man. Joseph really had to marry her to spare her life and give her respectability. Mary never even accused Joseph as the father. Joseph trusted in God that Mary was telling him the truth. They couldn't even advertize this truth since no one would believe it anyway. Faith and trust in God is still necessary today. Catholics accept the version of the Bible about the conception of Jesus.

well then..put yourself in her shoes....if you were a mother, would you watch you son be tried and beaten, crucified...walking around preaching he is the son of god, without at some point coming forth and saying "I made it all up?" would it really have been possible for a whole new religion to start and last 2000 years past the time the person died...just because his mother made up a story? and then that would also mean that Joseph the man who was to marry her, and found out she was pregnant would also then be telling a lie about the dream he had of the angel telling him that mary's birth was by god, and also the dream he had for them to go to egypt to escape herod would be a lie...and then the wise men looking for the star and thereby going to Herod would be a lie....etc etc, I'm sure at some point even after all they had seen one of the apostles would have asked her this.

I'm a mother....and when you become a mother whether you are afraid or not of the things you've done wrong, when it comes to your children it doesn't matter, to save them, you will do anything.....she would have come forward to tell her son she made it up once he began preaching things that made people in his time believe he was crazy.

i'm a Christian and that i come across not something fake in those statements taken from the Holy e book Curan. I admire Islam and settle for Allah (God). yet I settle for that to take any existence is displeasing to God(Allah) even in self protection or protection of my relatives. And if God could see extra healthful to objective me then he will understand i admire Him with my finished heart and soul and this on my own gets me to Paradise the place there will be far much less Muslims and Christians than the two believes.

Then we would have to believe that the largest religion in the world was based on a hoax. That would be a greater miracle that anything Jesus did. I doubt that she would have been willing to witness the brutal murder of her son, knowing that she could save him by revealing her lie. It is a great question. Ask your priest to give you an answer. If you are too embarrassed to ask, ask in confession.

Did you know Jesus' birth was foretold in Isaiah 9:6 and all throughout the Old Testament? God revealed Himself to Joseph in a dream and told him of her being pregnant so he wouldn't leave her. They both believed God.

I think your concerns are relevent. My advice is to get plugged in to a bible study or youth group at your church or a friend's church to dig deeper into the Bible. You'd be amazed to find out how big God really is.

Good luck and keep the faith.

well to put it simply...

...you would go to hell for believing in a false religion. but hey, don't let that get you down! I got tired of the whole God thing a lonnnnnnnnngggggg time ago. I find its better...and healthier... to take only the best parts of religions and use them as your own specific guidelines!
only you, and the criminal justice system, can tell you what is right or wrong. Don't make too many bad choices in life that you might regret.

peace.

I've been wondering that too. Honestly just accept that it's true and don't go convert to Judaism, because there's no evidence that it was a lie.
