You will not be responsible if you have properly sold the vehicle.

As long as you notify you DMV of the sale, then no. Most states require you to remove your license plates from the vehicle before transferring the car. Tickets are written to the license plates, not the vehicle.

In those states, where the plates stay with the car, it is very important to notify the DMV of the sale and draw up a bill of sale for the sale of the car.

Once you do your part - turn in your paperwork to the DMV and notify them of the changes - it's up to the new owner to do his part. I sold a car once, and the new owner totaled it and left it in a ditch within a week. He hadn't notified the DMV yet, so the Police contacted me. I had all the proper paperwork in order so I just showed them what I had, and that was it. It was all on him.

Well it's not the DMV you shoudl worry about it's the where you registar your car that will get you in trouble. Because when you sell a car you go to the courthouse to have your regristation changed over to teh buyer. AND if you just sell it and just sign the original tittle then they don't go to court and change it every ticket and aalmost anything that happens is your responsiblily until you show prove that it's not yours anymore.

May come to you.

It is best policy to always go to the DMV to transfer the title.

I had a friend who did not, and the buyer abandoned the car - they came after my friend for towing, and impounding charges.

As long as you returned the plates and signed the title over there should be no problems. The car is out of your hands.
