My husband is going to be in Iraq while the baby is born. Ever heard of freedom calls? or anything to directly get in contact with family while they are over there.

Get with the red cross and see if they have anything in place.
Also check all the local Veterans organizations. You never know.
And Thanks for your husbands service and your being there for him. Sometimes I think your job is tougher. I know i was fortunate to have my wife waiting for me every time I deployed.

It is certainly possible, but it highly depends on your husband's mission. Whether or not he is in a position to accept a call or place one.
Stay in contact with your husband's unit ombudsmen, if not that then contact MWR, they can try and set up the call...but it just might not be possible. But they can try. At the very least, they can get word to him on the status of you and your baby after delivery.

There is one wife where I live that got it set up for her husband to be able to be there for the birth via web cam. You could check to see if this is a possibility for you.

You have to contact the rear detachment NCO and he can get you in contact with your husband, it has happened 3 times since I have been in Iraq
~~RED CROSS TAKES A WHILE, BUT THE REAR D NCO WILL HAVE CONTACT MUCH FASTER, AS HE CALLS ALMOST EVERYDAY, BUT YOU DO NEED TO GET THE RED CROSS MESSAGE TO HIM ALSO SO HE CAN RETURN...GOOD LUCK!

you go through the American Red Cross. have all the information ready to go so that as soon as you deliver, the doctor can sign off on it and send it to the ARC who will contact the spouse. It is up to the CO whether or not he will be allowed to call home.

Contact your FRG they will be able to get in contact with the 1SGT or Commander in iraq.

might cost a lot but get a satellite phone he will have coverage every where in the world.
