Stress..and by clenching your teeth you tighten the jaw muscles(too much) and they hurt or get sore. The very last thing you want to do is chew gum!! That will make your jaw worse. I would consult your dentist at your next exam and cleaning and let him or her know you are concerned. They will probably recommend you to sleep in a night guard or a bite splint..even yes...sometimes during the day. Good luck to you.

You can try a "soft" night guard from the store, usually found in sporting goods stores for the use of boxers. A "hard" night guard is better but they are about $400 at the dentist and many insurance plans don't pay for them. You may want to get your TMJ (TMJ is the abbreviation for you joint, not a condition or disease as most people think) ck'd to make sure you don't have issues there, but it sounds like you are a classic grinder and you could do major damage to the nerves of your teeth if you don't get a night guard. If you clench/grind alot at work your Dr will suggest you wear it there too, but I never do, just at night. alot of people only where them when they notice they are stressed, but if you have already damaged the nerves you will be in pain b/f you know it. It 's best to wear it every night whether you think you are stressed or are grinding or not. Trust me, I've had the pain sneak up on me when I thought I wasn't grinding.

chew some gum! it seriously helps! or there are these clear things u put on ur teeth so during the day it wont hurt you if u start ckenching them. look for them! sorry i forgot what they are called! dont worry it is totaly normal! are u stressed? that can cause it. do something active (like sports or exercise) that can help get ur mind off things. good luck!!!

It is a sign of stress. Try more exercise. I do this when I am in deep thought, involved in a stressful activity etc... without knowing it! The best remedy is sleep and exercise and basically de-stress yourself.

I do it too but then I have been diagnosed with TMJ. Check with your dentist.

My mom has that problem, and so does my aunt. I think it could be TMJ, becuase that what they have!
