Don't say "america" say some people.

And I don't know why!

Its not just America that's over there trying to change the country, why would other countries come to our aid if they didn't think things could be changed over there? It's not just going to benefit the US if Iraq becomes stable. We aren't just there for oil, or for money. We can get oil from our own states in the US, and if we had to, we would further research the idea of having cars run on vegetable oil or something like that. Media and politicians give you idea that we are there for oil because they don't want to bother explaining things further to the dimwitted ones.

We are still there because the government is highly unstable, and its our own fault because our previous leaders didn't think about how their actions would affect things in the long run. At least Bush isn't withdrawing the minute Saddam was caught, at least he is trying to make things better over there. In world war II we were able to get the heck out of germany so fast because there were countires around it that were stable...the area around Iraq is very unstable. The president knew that we would be there for awhile when we went to war. Anybody who thought it was just going to be a little tift is a moron. If we leave abrudtly we risk being attacked again. Yet at the same time, I can understand why people are so angry that we are there. Its going to take YEARS and YEARS to even begin to stabalize Iraq. Most likely we will end up pulling out before this happens though. Honestly, I would rather have us withdraw quickly and have another attack on the US. Then all of you idiots would shut up and start supporting our president and troops again. It has nothing to do with political parties, it has everything to do with keeping war and attacks off of american soil.

Reading a lot of the answers you already got. Some continue to say we are in Iraq for the oil. If that were true, gas would be .23 a gallon instaed of $3.50.

No, we are in Iraq INSPITE of oil, not for it.

I can only say what I purcieve as the reality of the situation, and not liberal or conservative BS.

We said we went in because Saddam had WMD's. So? he used them on Iranians and Kurds. I don't give a damn about Iranians & Kurds.

Some real morons said we went in because of 911. Nope again, Saddam hated Al-Queda & the Taliban almost as much as he hated the U.S.

We went in to save the Shiites from being brutalized by the Dominant Sunni's. No again. No prise here. If the Shiites wanted to take-out Saddam, the Iranians would have sent a sniper.

This is what I think:

After 9/11, we knew we would be facing Radical Islam on a great scale. We knew the Taliban was a main cause of this radical mindset, but the other places were our key allies, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Can't bomb allies, it's in the How to be a Good President handbook, fifth edition.

But we did not want to fight the radicals by waiting for them to attack the US with more terrorist acts as they have in the past. We needed a battleground. OK, we automatically checked off Canada and Australia and western europe. We had to tell George W. that Azeroth was only in World of Warcraft and ficticious, so that was out. Well it was between Iraq and a hard place.
After several bouts of Paper, sissors, rock, it was Iraq.
We needed to go in, take out Sadam & crush his army, then fight all the nut cases in the Islamic world on Islamic soil.

Now as we fight AND defeat the radicals, we also bring about a democracy in the Middle east, hoping it will spread throughout the hardline countries like Iran and Syria.

Now, I don't want to sound like I'm spreading another conspiracy theory, just trying to make sense of it all.

our worst threat now is internal. Not the time to let our guard down.

oil and corporate power and a big dose of righteous behavior after 9-11 attacks and that we had to do something to get even .........seems getting even usually back fires......and hurts the people we were trying to protect.......but it moved a lot of money around into different pockets......are money went to defense contractors, iraq people, oil fields, big suppliers of equipment, are factory workers, our political people, etc. ......and we meant to do well and we burnt up some more oil in the process ....and we and them both wrecked the lives of how many people on both sides? in the name of doing the responsible thing to protect us........and the world from evil.........and all the little working ants of the world , how do we feel now , ........maybe nothing has really changed or has it? WE here with home loans will pay but we are alive , and we can work our way out of it, some soldjers cannot , their dead or hurt real bad ........the struggle on planet earth goes on , death on the highway, hate and destruction, population explosion, .......can we care enough and love and all take responsiblity for are actions and for all the religions of the world and swiming in all are wants and needs

1. if we leave the terrorists take power in oil rich land increasing there ability to not hurt, but destroy the USA
2. we can put far more pressure against Iran by being in Iraq
3. they killed over 200 Americans in Lebanon
they killed 17 on a US navy ship as they refueled
they killed 6 in the world trade center
they killed 18 American on a peace keeping mission in
Africa to try to stop 300,000 Innocent Africans from
starving to death

An each time, we simply turned and walked away. So they came to believe if they kill a few of our people we will turn and run. Bin laden himself was quoted as saying this.

So they struck us again and kill 3000. So we fight them in Afghanistan. That was ok right? so why would we leave Iraq to let terror take another strong hold. One that benefits them more so than Afghanistan did?

4. as far as changing something that has been going on for centuries, the Romans were in power for 12 century's. Where are they today? Do not underestimate the change war can bring, good or bad.

We got into it for various reasons. Main reason Hussein was a cruel dictators and when his sons took over -- they were100xs worse then him. Alot of his and his sons brutality never made it to the news. Pregnant women were used for bayonet practice when they invaded Kuwait for example. His one son made advances at a women whoturned him down. He had her kidnapped - raped for 10 days by his guards and deemed her too dirty for him now - covered her with honey and threw her to 10 starving dogs.... Just to name a few.

Now we are stuck there. If we leave it will definately turn to a terrorist state. It would be 100x more unstable than it was.

That is how Bin Laden came to power. We supported Afgahnistan covertly against the Russians. Once the Russians left - so did we....Bin Laden ran amok in Afganistan. And we all know what he was capable of.

iraq is unstable. the whole middle eats is unstable, and because its gaining power, the theory is that it needs to be stabilized.

look at it this way - right now the people in the middle eats take their religion so seriously they will kill themselves for it.
during the crusades and witch burnings, the christians did similarly f*cked up things.

now imagine the crusader christians with some real world power, whose only more powerful adversary is a culture who says "hey, come to our country, we will give you education, a nice new life, lots of hot women who dont cover themselves up, and the freedom to do whatever you want."

LOL, the crusaders would have obliterated the world within months if they had the current technology.

the point is, old world mentality plus new world technology, is very, very, VERY, dangerous.

the americans just did it in such a stupid sloppy way, typical of them.
the naked pyramid photos? what the hell was that all about? now the whole world is going to hate americans over something so stupid and preventable. they should use more tact.

you cant just invade a country and then pull out. you need to help rebuild the government, ensure security, make sure the infrastructure is stable. once these are meet you can slowly pull out the troops and ships off the coast of Iraq, and its not only Iraq Afghanistan as well.

We went there to get rid of a murderous tirant(Saddam) we did that but the reason we cant leave is b/c the gov is corupt and cant run the country yet. When Iraq can run their own country maybe we will be gone. Until then im going to keep making terrorist die for their country.

That is simple and easy to answer.

The same reason all wars though out history have been fought.

One of three reasons:

1. money
2. power
or
3. both of the above.

Not a popular explanation of war but it does seem to be the most accurate when one breaks down all the “fluff” explanations to their simplest elements.

The primary cause, as I feel that any "thinking" person will agree, is to secure a most vital resource for our energy needs: the large oil fields located not only there, but throughout the region.

Any other subscribed reasons, are a ruse, subterfuge: not genuine, no matter who proclaims them to be legitimate.

We are still there because, not America, but the present administration is rather paranoid in my view; and incapable of admitting its mistakes.
