Im a cutter and ive had one too many suicidal thoughts. and a couple days ago i snorted tylenol( dont do it, you dont get high and it burns like hell). So i have this friend who is probably going to tell all this to our hall director in a few weeks. ( hall director is a graduate student who works for the college in each dorm. they kind of over see the residence halls) And im wandering if i'm about to be sent to a psych ward. my friend keeps saying i wont. but i dont really believe him...maybe its just paranoia or something.

but seriously can i get sent away for all this stuff?

Wow, I've only been looking at these chats for 5 minutes and am already shocked at the amount of misinformation out there.

No, you won't automatically get sent to the psych ward. Psych wards are pretty busy these days and shrinks are not, as some may think, all hot to admit people just for kicks. Unless you are actively suicidal-ie thinking about killing yourself right now-actively homicidal, or psychotic to the point that you can't take care of yourself its not an automatic admission. Even suicidal people are not automatically admitted to the ward if they can reliably contract for safety and the shrinks feels comfortable that the person will seek help before actually acting on such thoughts. Now, if you've had a recent serious suicide attempt or are unstable right now you may be encouraged to come in but more likely they will want you to follow up as an outpatient. Someone referred to the two doc admission-this is only for involuntary admissions and only applies iin certain states, such as NY. In other states, patients can be held by the doc but only long enough to get them to the local magistrate who then orders them into the hospital against their will IF they are imminently dangerous to themselves or others.

If I were you I would get started on some outpt therapy. Clearly, it sounds like you need the help and if you are worried about somehow getting admitted, showing that you are actively engaged in outpt therapy is going to make everyone feel a whole lot more comfortable. No as for that Tylenol, let me let me give you some advice. Knock that off right now! Seriously, as I tell all cutters and Tylenol ODers, people think that Tylenol is a harmless drug. And if they are really serious about killing themselves they think they will just fall asleep and that will be it. Wrong on both points. Tylenol in large doses is very toxic to the liver and can cause liver failure. I assure you that liver failure is neither quick nor painless and unless you get a transplant you are sure to die a very nasty death over the course of days to weeks depending on how severe the failure. If you doubt me, go hand around the ICU in any major hospital for a while and you will see for yourself. Obviously this is something to work on in therapy but until then I would say that if you feel compelled to do something to feel pain, a better thing to do in the short term would be to hold ice cubes in your hands as long as you can or put a rubber band around your wrist and snap it. Both will give you a little bit of pain, which is usually what people are looking for to distract them from the pain inside, without leaving long term damage.

Lots of helpful advice already. I don't know if your hall director
will contact a medical doctor who may admit you to a psych
ward. Something nobody has brought up yet is that it may be the best place for you. They can start you on meds to make you feel better in a SAFE environment where you cannot hurt yourself. I've been admitted three times. Each time I did not want to go but afterwards, when I am thinking clearly I was glad that my psychiatrist made this choice. Hang in there and I hope you feel better

A medical doctor can get you admitted to a psychiatric hospital, especially if there is reason to believe you will kill yourself or be harmful to others.

Who knows what a "hall director" is going to do, but it's possible they will try to encourage you to go to a doctor. I don't see how that person would have the authority to "have you sent to a psych ward" though.

Your hall director has no authority to send you to psych ward. He can report your behavior if he seriously thinks that you are in a crisis are a suicide risk. The authorities in this case would be the Dean of Students.

I suggest you get yourself seen for some counseling and perhaps medication to manage your symtoms--do you honestly want to continue to feel this way>

Your hall director has no authority to involuntarily commit you.

The smart move for you at this point, is to voluntarily enter outpatient counseling (the vast majority of colleges offer these services on campus). Approach the hall director yourself (before she approaches you), and let her know that you recognize there is a problem, and that you are taking steps to correct it. Let her know that you're in counseling.

Hang in there,

yep u could get sent to the hospital for that. im anorexic and a cutter and ive had suicidal thoughts n my mom saw some of my cuts n sent me to my doctor to change my antidepressants cuz she thought that might have been what was causing it and then my doctor got all worried and immediatly said that they were going to sent me to inpatient at the hospital....and i threw this huge fuss and so he called my psyciatrist and they talked it over and said that i had 2 choices, 1. go to the hospital 2. go to this intensive outpatient program for 3 weeks for 5 hrs a day...so i got that choice..but i was lucky to actually have that option..idk if they'll have that option where you live, so they'll probably just send u to an inpatient place and you'll probably have to stay there for a couple weeks...

The only way that they can send you is if 2 physicians tell you that you have to go (otherwise known as being 2-PC'd). I think that they will highly recommend that you go on your own, or at least speak with the school counselor.

If you are into cutting yourself, then you need professional help. Go seek help on your own but watch out there are alot of quack *** bastard shrinks out there who are only interested in making lotsof money for themselves and ignoring the hypocratic oath.
