i just got a 15 inch hdtv but why do i still see black bars on the tv just like i did with my old tube style tv? i thought with the widescreen tvs u dont see the black bars anymore?

Some TV stations like to transmit their 4:3 pictures FRAMED in a 16:9 FRAME....

Then you get these Pillar boxes.....

You might try to see if you can change the WIDE or ASPECT button and see if you can find a setting that FILLS the screen....

There are a few different formats of widescreen filming. Read through the explanations in the link below. You will always get black bars unless it is a full screen film that is stretched or a true 16x9 widescreen filmed format.

If you are receiving an old standard definition show, it's still broadcast in the square format. Your TV is showing it correctly.

If you want to widen it or zoom into it so the picture displays full screen, check your screen settings for something like zoom or wide zoom and switch to that.

Zoom will cut off some of the top and bottom to fill in the sides. Wide zoom will stretch the picture so people and faces look awkward. Or you can leave it as a square. Personally I prefer it to show as it was meant to.

you need to get component cables if you have a progressive scan dvd player (be willing to pay some money)

the dvd has to be widescreen format
