Yes. Besides the brown bread already mentioned bread was supplied to the US military in cans for field rations. Don't know if it still is or not. But I hope not, I have had that when I was a kid and Dad was a Marine. Nasty, horrible stuff. I don't want our soldiers subjected to that.

Boston brown bread is typically sold in cans. It is a sweet bread made with molasses. It was common among the whaling culture in New England in the 1800's. Since the show SpongeBob uses a lot of New England seafaring imagery, I wouldn't be surprised if they meant Boston brown bread.

There is the kind you get at the refrigerator section of the supermarket that comes in a can that you pop open and then bake- but I don't know if that's what you mean!

PUMPKIN BREAD IN A COFFEE CAN
3/4 c. all purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
3/4 c. granulated sugar
1 tsp. packed light brown sugar
1/3 c. vegetable oil, melted butter
2 lg. eggs
1/2 tsp. black walnut extract (optional)
1 c. canned solid-pack pumpkin
1 c. walnut pieces, chopped coarse
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease and flour two 1 pound coffee cans. Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon. Beat sugars, oil, eggs and extract in a large bowl with a wooden spoon until well blended. Add flour mixture alternately with pumpkin in 3 additions, blending well after each. Stir in nuts. Spoon evenly into prepared cans filling them half full. Bake 50 to 60 minutes until pick inserted in center of bread comes out clean. Cool in cans on rack 10 minutes. Run a thin knife or spatula around can sides to loosen. Remove breads; cool top sides up on wire rack. Makes 2 loaves.
Note: If you don't have coffee cans, you can bake batter in 1 greased 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch loaf pan for about 1 hour.
SPICED CARROT BREAD
2 (1 lb.) cans (coffee size)
4 eggs
2 c. sugar
1 1/4 c. vegetable oil
3 c. unsifted all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. finely shredded raw carrot
3/4 c. walnuts, chopped
Grease the insides of cans and set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat eggs with electric mixer and gradually add sugar. Add oil and continue beating until well blended. Next, stir in flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Beat until smooth. Stir in carrots and nuts. Spoon batter into prepared cans. Be sure to fill cans no more than 2/3 full. Bake 1 hour or until tester in center of bread comes out clean. Leaving bread in cans, cool 10 minutes on wire racks. Then remove from cans and cool completely.
BOSTON BROWN BREAD
1/2 lb. raisins
1 stick butter
2 c. boiling water
2 tsp. baking soda
2 eggs
2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
4 c. sifted flour
4 tsp. cinnamon
6 green bean cans or 3-4 coffee cans
In a bowl, cut up butter with raisins, add baking soda and pour boiling water all and let set overnight.
In another bowl, put eggs, beat lightly. Add sugar, salt, flour, soda, cinnamon. Mix together and add raisin mixture. Mix well.
Grease and flour 6 green bean cans or 3-4 coffee cans. Put wax paper rounds in bottom. Fill half full and place on cookie sheet. Place foil loosely over top of cans. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Cool until warm and pour out of cans. Cool completely before you put Saran Wrap on it.

my granny is from massachusets and she said that brown bread used to come in a can. they would eat it with baked beans.
