Okay, I'm 17 and my psychiatrist says I have Social Anxiety Disorder and I should go in regularly to "talk" with him. But my parents won't let me, they say if I go see a psychiatrist, I'm some how less of a person, and will embarrass them. So I was wondering if there is anything I can do by myself to help treat it without psychiatry or medications because my parents won't allow that...

I'm very sorry that your parents are so close-minded about this. You need help now, while you are young.

If you can, get a copy of Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway by Susan Jeffers PhD.D. It will likely be available at your public library. Or, if you have the funds, you can buy it on-line at Amazon or Chapters for less than $20. I recently sent a copy to a teen-aged relative who is phobic. It is simple to read since it's divided into sections and doesn't have to be read from beginning to end.

Take your time in social situations. You are not required to make conversation. Being a good listener has great advantages, especially when dealing with those who are insecure themselves and love to talk.

Dress as neatly as you can. And spend a bit of extra time with your hair and general appearance. It will make you feel better about yourself, less self-conscious that is.

I do understand your problem, having recovered from it myself. I was obliged to disregard my parents' and young husband's ignorance regarding such matters and find help on my own. That's why it's important for you to do the same. ASAP

My thoughts and best wishes are with you. Good luck!

If you are in school, there are typically school psychologists you can see. You can explain your parents will not allow you to see a therapist outaside of school and they can discuss this with you as well as options for easing your social anxiety.

Some ways I coped with my anxiety in school were; sitting in the front of the room so I was focused on the teacher rather than the number of people in the room, followed a routine, ate healthy meals and ate a good amount to keep my body healthy, slept 7-8hrs a night, prepared myself for tests and quizzes as well as did my homework before hand so I wasn't rushing.
I found if something was bothering me physically like needing to use the bathroom, being tired or not eating well my anxiety would kick in easier and be worse. I found routine and planning really helped my anxiety levels. Good luck!

dude your on the same road as me :) Ive put up with it for all my life, i was pretty much born with it. Horrible feeling!! i can say social anxiety is the worse their is as social life is basically life isnt it lol ans its gotta be put to the max i got prescriptions, didnt really help me, helped me a bit but like.. .it was still their, the thing is it isnt really to do with mental health even your doctor may say otherwise, from my experience its just the way your life has been constucted or maybe you were just born with it. But i know the feeling, i can really understand. Sometimes, if the medicine doesnt work, then just say to yourself, "am i gonna let this stupid disorder control what and cannot do and experience" its just a deal with it thing :( :( sometimes it can be linked to the past! i have a friend who actually completely got rid of it. I would strongly recommend you get a prescription, and do as your doctor ses, as my social anxiety was very severe. Depending on yours, ask yourself "Is this affecting my life" "Am i coping" If you have a "no" then i would go and see the doctor, the pills can really settle it for a while. :) I learned to cope with it as i eventually found the pills didnt work and i completely just ignored it and concentrated on something else, its hard but you learn from experience, And yeh, if you want my opinion, the medicine just like helps you chill, it lasts quite a while and you can concentate on what people are saying, the medicine is a good start, and will help you as your talking to people and learning to cope while the disorder is knocked out. But its not a cure :( you have to learn, how did this start, why, and find out what is causing it and eventually you will naturally learn to tackle it. Life is short Dont let this stupid, pointless disorder bring your lifes potential down Best of luck ^_^
