Ok, I know that not all the atheists on here are hostile. But that was a catchy sounding question.

But *some* of you are being extremely hateful toward non-Atheists. Doesn't that kind of make you a hypocrite?

And before your head explodes, yes yes I know that many non-Atheists are hypocrites as well!! You don't need to lecture me on it!

My point is, people should not be going around making such sweeping generalizations, whatever their belief/nonbelief. And then to get so angry and antagonistic, when supposedly that's one the reasons you don't like Christians?

How can you sit there and say Christians are idiots? You don't know all Christians. Just like I don't know all Atheists. And since I don't know all Atheists, I wouldn't dream of making such sweeping, negative remarks about ALL atheists.

So every Christian says that you are going to "burn in hell"? Every one? I don't recall ever saying that. People should read the question as it is and not drag in their prejudices. Try, as hard as it may be for you, to see people as individuals, just like you say you want to be seen.

I personally have met some "Christians" who were hateful. I don't like them. But I don't say all Christians are like that. Would you say that everyone of a particular race are criminals? People who are reasonable know that's not true.

Please read Cassandra's post, as she illustrates my point exactly. She keeps using the word "you" to mean "Christians"... when I have never in my life had a conversation with her about Christianity. When you say "you", who do you mean?

There are a fair amount of hostile atheists, just like there are a fair amount of hostile Christians/Muslims/your faith here. Don't take it personally. It has nothing to do with a person's beliefs, it's just that some people would be hostile, self-righteous jerks no matter what religion (or lack thereof) they subscribe to.

I suspect that those atheists who are hostile are the most frequent responders, and the most verbose. That's just a hunch; I can't prove it.

Also it appears to me that Christians sometimes say offensive things without realizing or intending to do so. For example, "Ours is the only true religion." Or "This is a Christian country." I just saw a posted question: "Why doesn't everybody celebrate Christmas? It's fun!" Such statements are not intentionally hostile, but they naturally draw angry responses.

I'm glad you qualified that, because there are a number of reasonable people around here, atheist, theist and agnostic.

I have, from time to time, tried to point out the hypocrisy of some of the positions taken by atheists and my fellow Christians. I'm usually just ignored. If I do get a response, it's generally a flame - including the most recent response I got from an atheist who basically said that atheists were entitled to ignore the rules they lay down for Christians.

The best thing you can do is just ignore the nut cases. I don't always follow that rule particularly well myself, alas.

When most christians stop asking insulting questions, then we will have something to talk.about.
You people think you can ask the most ignorant, rude, asinine, degrading questions, that you would never even consider asking anyone else, and then you wonder why we would feel, ''hostile''.
And I am consistent about everything I say. I call you on your ignorance, i answer back in the same tone I am asked.
I don't say you are an idiot. You are entitled to believe whatever you choose to believe, as long as you afford me, the same courtesy, and do not preach at me. I don't want your religion. I have been there, and done that, and I am NOT going back.
And last but not least, I leave the sweeping generalizations to all of the christians, who are so eloquent at it.

Now, please feel free to report me, for answering your question, truthfully!!!!

I don't believe in god, but yet I don't think Christmas should be not celebrated in stores, and schools shouldn't have under god in pledge. I can't understand why people want the country un-Christianized. The country is 80%+ Christian, and it is a democracy, so shouldn't the majority's views be represented? I do believe god is imaginary, doesn't mean I need to call all Christian's idiots. Except for those who call us idiots, that is. An eye for an eye as they say.

Funny, I am neither an atheist nor christian, and I think that there is more hostility from the christians on Answers than any other religious group. Maybe the trouble lies in that even when someone writes something like "praise the lord" it can imply a tone that is condescending to others.
(Your question however is worded nicely! :))

Of course not..... not all of us are hostile. We're only hostile when someone tries to come up and shove their beliefs down our throats -- that we hate, because we don't do the same. And mind you, they don't need to be christians.... ANYONE who tries to convince me that their beliefs are *THE* right thing will bring my hostility out. I've met people from many religions or beliefs and as long as they respect me, I respect them too and have no hostility towards them or blame them of having any towards me.

Well, I care not about anyone elses religious philosophy. I care not about any religious philosophy. I only care about making a positive contribution for global population benefit. Hypocrisy is a human characteristic representing patronizing. Secure humans have no need to proselytize, or defend their position.

The common Atheist, I've found, is much more hostile from behind the keyboard then in every day life.

It's mostly the ones on here, from what I've seen. A lot of atheists aren't bad people, and may not even really be atheists. They might be turned off by conventional religion.

The ones on here mainly have an axe to grind, an agenda to push and are insulting and disrespectful.
