If a car is impounded without the keys, and unclaimed, it can be sold at auction. The buyer can have keys cut by a locksmith with very little problem! In some cases, the keys will have to be purchased from a dealer (laser cut keys) but as long as you have ownership papers, the dealer will gladly order it for you!

If you are planing on trying to buy your own impounded car back at the auction, be aware that the tow company has the right to bid on the car, and will do so up to toe amount that is owed on the vehicle. You would be better off paying the bill!

could the ignition be changed if you bought the car without keys. Looks like they would have to have the keys if you bought one. But be careful at the auction. You might be buying a lemon dr'ed up.

Well, most dealerships like Ford,Dodge any like 'em will make you a new key for around $95 and up depending on car type and model. You will need to provide ownership papers (legal ones) I know it happened to me once.

They can change the ignition chamber for a new key, no big deal really. Locksmith should be able to do it for a nominal fee.

They should have had them when you bought the car. You can also take the car to a dealer and have the ignition switch changed out..
