What is the actual use of the van? A company can own a vehicle that isn't registered as commercial if it isn't used as a commercial vehicle. The actual definition of commercial use varies from state to province and country to country. But if the van is just transportation, maybe carting documents, it is not normally a commercial vehicle. If it is a plumber's van, carrying only the supplies and tools, it isn't necessarily a commercial vehicle, depending on the law of the land. If it a plumber's van, and carries goods being sold to others, such as new cabinets and fixtures, it would almost certainly be a commercial vehicle. You best bet is to check the use with a local registrations agent, but your company probably has done so already.

Commercial is required in Calif. if you own and operate a vehicle that can carry a load. Like a truck, van. etc. Only time you can register it outside of a commercial vehicle is it is a small truck with a camper shell and you don`t put anything in it. Including groceries in the back end.

In most states, it's a commercial vehicle if it has commercial instead of passenger license plates.

Some states require signage, but not all do.
