It was decided in the pre-existance.
All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.
In the premortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshiped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize his or her divine destiny as an heir of eternal life.

I'm not sure if karma would necessarily affect whether you male or female. Most likely, your gender would be determined according to what sex you were in your previous life (I'm assuming that it would average out to be a gender rotation for each life, with not too many subsequent lives spent as a single sex...). But, it may actually be that you actually decide your own gender before birth, so it would depend upon the spiritual need to experience life more as a certain gender over another more than establishing an even male/female incarnation balance.

Latest research show that the physical state of the woman plays a role too. Female foetus are more resistant so if the woman is not in very good shape or go through a lean period she has more chance to have a girl, the acidity level of the womb favourite the X carrying sperm.

RUBBISH! QURAAN says that it is the man who is responsible for the gender of the child. Something as progressive as this came 1400 years ago when science was not even known to the people of that region. Our hindu spciety is still fighting this. Some food for thought!!?

It depends what kind of experience the soul needs. If it needs to experience being a male it will do that and vice-versa. Obviously the lessons involved would be totally different. And the lessons needed depend on any number of past life actions. If you were a man that abused women for example, maybe you need to come back as a woman to see how it feels.

I believe in evolution, people are born through genetics and chance occurances between two zygotes that then determine the sex by the chromosomes in each cell, its that simple
