I have been on 75 mg of Effexor XR for about 6 months now. So far, I love its effects. I really do feel like a new person. I usually take it around 2 or 3 in the afternoon everyday and I have never skipped a day. However, I took it rather late the other day at around 7:00pm and I got crazy side effects. I was shaking and I had head rushes that felt like I was tripping on drugs. I was nauseus. I couldn't even drive. It took about 4 hours after I took the pill until I felt normal again. It was just awful. My question is, will I ever be able to get off this stuff? Even weening off sounds bad. I didn't realize how powerful this stuff was. Also, how do you know that you're ready to get off antidepressants? I mean, they say when you feel better, but how do you know that you really do feel better or if it's just the medicine working?

Antidepressants could have all sorts of effects on your body which are amplified should any irregularity happen. You should worry about the long-term effects, though, as you become more and more dependant on the drug the more you use it (just like steroids).
Laying off these drugs can be quite a challenge unless you feel ready for it. You have to decrease the dosage monthly until you utterly stop taking the drug. Consumption of alcohol & other drugs most probably decelerate the recovery/quitting process too. Just navigate sober through those dire straits for awhile; the open sea awaits.
p.s. I'm NOT a doctor or a psychologist, yet have picked up my share of tips along the way.

Effexor is a whipsaw medication. For those that can tolerate it, it is great. For those who are unable, it is a cruel and unusual punishment.
My experience with it is with my daughter. When she took it, it backlashed on her immediately. The therapist we were seeing was adamant that she stay on it. When she expressed a passing suicide remark, the therapist had her hospitalized on a 72 hour hold. She was 14. We were put under warning of arrest if we did not comply. We sued the practice. The PhD candidate therapist was sacked and the prescribing psychiatrist was released from affiliation.
Psychiatric medicine is now a near industrial, Big Pharma driven enterprise. I talk to a lot of people who are taking some really hot meds. I refer those who are really wound up in several power meds to a detox specialist who has a biochem PhD and an MD.
What ever you do, do any adjustments or withdrawal with very capable supervision.
Our daughter is now doing better on Seroquel. It could be that her body chemistry tolerates that now but will cause problems later.
With many people it is a never ending battle.

I currently take Effexor 75 mg and if I miss any I get light headed and sick feeling. I also felt this way with Zoloft. Several anti-depressants have "withdrawal" symptoms such as this. If you truly need them then it is because there is a chemical imbalance in your brain and with myself personally I don't forsee that ever correcting itself....meaning I intend to take it for the rest of my life. I also don't think Effexor is a temporary treatment type drug. Before I began taking it I had to ween myself off my previous medication because of possible drug interactions and those two weeks were horrible. I went through the "withdrawal" symptoms then severe mood swings.

yes you will be able to get off of them when you are ready. the Dr. will slowly reduce your dosage until you can quit completely. as far as when you are ready, i would leave that to a counselor to help you decide.
