I have a bullmastiff, people often say it's a MASTIFF, but there
is a huge difference.

Never had anyone not know right off the bat that Sunny is a poodle. Except when I found her at the animal shelter, they had her listed as a mix. (she was matted)
However, I've noticed that ALOT of people will refer to small dogs as poodles! No matter what breed they are.
Sometimes I wonder if certain people think that any small breed is just called a poodle. Like...'Small dog' has the same meaning as the word poodle.

People ALWAYS ask us "what breed are they?" Never fails. We have two mutts. Both are red and white terrier mixes with funky coats. One is short and bossy, the other is long, lean, and goofy.
Our mutts are most often confused with being some kind of purebred.

I have Cardigan Welsh Corgis, which is the breed of Corgi with a tail... so most people IF they know what a Corgi is, arent real familar with corgis with tails they usually see them with out tails. So they always mistake mine for a Sheltie or Basset mixture. I have to explain to them that they are Cardigan Corgis cause if I just say they are a Corgi I get this dumb**** look like I am lying cause of course they have tails. Sheesh.

Miniature Pinscher and Toy Manchester Terrier - they look very much alike.
Toy Manchester Terrier, here:

Min Pin here:

It's especially hard when they both don't have tails docks and no ear croppings.

Some people have asked if my dog, a cocker spaniel, is a poodle! My black cocker that i used to have had a wavy coat. After his show career, I trimmed his coat about an inch on his legs and his hair curled up....plus, their ears get curly after getting wet and because their hair looks curly, people assume they are poodles!!

I've never had confusion with any of my dogs (mostly great danes...pretty hard to mistake for another breed) until my lab mix (probably lab/boxer.) For some reason a lot of the people that see him comment that he has pit bull in him. It never seemed like a big deal until I got a comment about my "vicious dog" and how people like me should be arrested....

My greyhounds are frequently called whippets and one mom even told her daughter to look at the 3 great danes!
My bearded collie was always called an old english sheepdog.
My pharoah hound was an under-sized, odd-colored doberman.
Thank goodness for the afghans - they can't be mistaken for anything else!

My breeds do not get confused with any breeds per se, but they do distinguish between dogs that have positive and confident energies and those that are nervous, paranoid, hyper active individuals.
It is unfortunate, because owners being over protective actually create their dogs to function as the dog to pick on. IOW in the Dog World, the nervous dog invariably has to become the target of pursuit and like a fox they start hunting the dog down.
I walk in a pack and have to be on the alert all the time. Dogs that are laid back and easy going, have no problems.
I'm not sure if this in line with the question asked, but like humans, we have a sense when we instinctively pick up a person we do not feel comfortable with and others we immediately are drawn to. It is the same with my dogs, who are happy, exuberant, enthusiastic and see life as one great party.
Rarely bump into little snappers, they usually run straight back to their owners. LOL

Oddly enough my natural eared Dobermans are often confused with Rottweilers, or Coonhounds.
