We recently got a 4 1/2 month old lab from a co-worker of mine who had her and couldn't look after her anymore. She spent all her time in her kennel and was never really paid any attention too. I told him if he coudlnt' find a home for her in a week that my boyfriend and I would buy her from him and try to find her a good home. Meanwhile getting more attention (we have to young labs as well). A week and a half after getting her she passed away. I fed her in her kennel one morning. A few minutes later I hurt whining noises from her kennel, so I looked in and she looks asleep, but twitching. My boyfriend pulled her out, she wouldn't wake her. He started doing mouth to mouth on her. We got her to emergency within 15 mins of it happening, but she died on the way there. The vet said she most likely choked on a peice of her kibble. I haven't told my co-worker. I feel horrible and Im devastated..i don't know what to do. I am not a bad person, but I feel like the biggest peice of crap!!!

When it happened, we couldn't afford to get an autopsy done...it cost us enough just to bring her into emergency and for all the work they did trying to revive her heart. I really wanted too get an autopsy, in case she had gotten into anything that my other dogs could possibly get into as well. The vet was positive that she choked on her dog food. Since she was a lab and hoovered her food down, Thats why I fed her in her kennel, cause she wouldn't eat as fast when my other dogs weren't around. And when my boyfriend was giving her mouth to mouth, peices of kibble kept spraying up at him.

I'm really sorry about what happened. You're definately not a bad person and you didn't intend for it to happen, It was obviously an accident. I know you feel bad but at least your tried your best to save her life. Your co-worker is going to be pretty upset about it but It's best to tell him the truth and not prolong it.

well you cant feel bad...accidents happen and was the vet for sure that she choked? because puppies can have lots of issues that would make them pass. if he did not run any tests on the dog or if she had not ever been to the vet yet or ever had any tests ran...then it could be she was anemic? where her gums pale before she passed? worms? heart worms? anything could be the cause. dont beat yourself up over this and im sorry for your loss. i would tell her that the dog passed but i wouldnt say the choking part if you dont feel comfortable. you could say anything like being anemic or what ive mentioned above. i hope this helps.

I just seen your second reply to your question...freak accidents happen. the only way you should feel at fault is if she was not suppose to be on kibble yet at all...im sure if she was away from her mother already then she was suppose to be on it...so your not at fault

I'm sorry to hear about your puppy. This is one of those fluke things, and there wasn't anything else you could do about it. You checked on her when she was whining, you noticed she wasn't acting normal, you performed CPR, and you took her to an Emergency Clinic. You took all the right steps, you did everything in your power to try to save her. Please don't feel bad about this, it was not your fault. And the vet didn't give you a definitive reason, so the pup might have had a pre-existing medical condition that you were not aware of.

*I also agree with DP, you could have a necropsy done to see exactly why she died.

Unless he found kibble in her windpipe that sounds suspicious to me. I've had labs and raised lab puppies and never had one choke no matter how fast they ate. But the important part is that it isn't your fault that she passed away. Sometimes even when you do everything right, things can go wrong. Let the previous owner know what happened and that the vet felt it wasn't anything you did wrong. I'm sorry you had this happen to you.

I'm sorry for your loss....it was just a freak accident that could happen to anyone. Your vet is probably correct about her choking. You were trying to help the pup and it's not your fault in any way.

You should tell your co-worker. Just be honest and up front and tell him what happened. As long as he isn't a jerk, he will understand....and if he is a jerk....well then who cares what he thinks.

Well if you don't want him to get mad at you than just tell him exactly what happened and he might understand. And ask to buy a new pup for him and it might help him recover if that previous pup really meant a lot to him, unless he doesn't want another dog, he might ask for the money of the dogs death, but don't bring it up or he will ask, so Good Luck!

this kind of things happen htere was nothign you could do you did everythign you could. Mouth to mouth and try to get to the vets.
I know it's hard and you feel you have to blame yourself for this but there is no blame just a freak accident.

just tell your coworker the truth. you took this lonely pup in and you tried to give him a secured life, but fate wished differently for him. you even went to the trouble to take him to the emergency room despite the fact you could barely afford it. in short, you did your best, and just tell the coworker the truth.
