I had a question that I was wondering about. In the movies and sometimes in person, I see people shoot their gun into the air to scare someone, or for just pure enjoyment because their stupid. What goes up must come down right? Doesn't shooting a bullet into the air always come back down and have the chance of killing someone? Even a shotgun?

Thanks fellas, just pure curiosity, sounds like a stupid question to me because I would obviously think yes, but I've seen it done so many times I'm almost not sure.

Thanks in advance.

I've heard its legal in some states? Is this legal in Texas? Seems like one of the states it would be legal in.

I appreciate the responses, but is it legal in Texas? Haven't been able to find much online, was wondering if anybody knew.

I read about the mythbusters episode, basically, it can kill someone but is unlikely.

Ok, at this point, I KNOW! I just want to know if it is illegal in Texas or not. First person to send me a response to this will get a best answer! You have to have a link posted as well to backup your answer.

Still haven't seen a satisfatory answer on if it is illegal to shoot a gun in the air in Texas. Got a decent answer, but no specific website. Wiki.org doesn't really give me much. I need a specific website!
First response satisfying that will get BEST ANSWER.

Go to the Discovery Channel Website, and look up myth busters. They did a pretty cool experiment that dealt with exactly the questions you are asking. I don't want to spoil it for you, so if you can find it, you will be surprised at what you learn. YouTube may also have a clip of it.

A bullet will easily injure/kill someone when it comes down. Shot in a shotgun will have a different effect though, waterfowl hunters sometimes feel the bird shot fall on them from other people shooting at birds in the air between them. That is in a 200 yard arc though so no one go out and shoot at freinds with bird shot, it is a dumb idea.
I should certainly hope it isn't legal anywhere, but it sounds like something an american state would allow.

In general the speed a bullet comes down will be about 90% less than it was fired.

Remember it won't come point down, it was fall base backwards or maybe destabilise and hit sideways.

Which if you are unlucky means it may penetrate your skull enough to kill you, or may just give a hell of scalp would and a lump.

I do not live in Texas, but the Wikipedia dictionary says that it is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by one years imprisonment, and $4000 fine. It states it is illegal in Ariz, Cal, Minn, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin....

There is no law in the state of Texas banning the discharge of a firearm into the air. Therefore it is legal in Texas.

Don't do it, the bullet will come down at a high velocity and possibly kill someone.

To a degree it depends on caliber - a .22 will not impact as hard as a .50 BMG.
