Carefully. I ride the clutch on the way out of the garage, making sure my mirrors clear the garage door frame then start worrying about other things. I dodge the light pole, squeeze past the garbage can, and veer into the alley.

When leaving the front drive, I usually twist and contort around due to my proximity to an elementary school, swivelling back and forth to look through every piece of glass in my car.

My parents' drive is more of a challenge. With their long, ribbon strip drive designed when the Model T was the most advanced car the world had seen, I have to adjust a mirror slightly and keep the left rear tire on the edge of the pavement. I stop before I get to the walk, make sure everything's clear, then back out into the street.

I either roll down the window or open the door and lean out. I line up the side of the car with the edge of the driveway. I figure if I'm all the way over to the left, the other side will be okay.

Why not back IN to the driveway, when you can plainly see that both lanes of the street and the sidewalks are clear? Then you can drive forward in a better visual position to see pedestrians and cars that might otherwise intersect your path.

If you can't back it up, we'll all be better off if you leave it parked.
