If it's simply the lap style belt in the back seat then don't use them. A study was done that concluded that lap belts alone cause internal organ damage in the pelvic region much more severe than would have been caused by not using the lap belt. However if the newer over the shoulder style belts are in the car then by all means use them because they distribute the force of the collision over your stronger chest region. There's a reason all new cars have over the shoulder seat belts in front and back now.

It is VERY important!! I do it automatically, no matter where I am sitting in a car (even though certain people make fun of me because i'm sitting in the backseat or where ever). It is completely a habit for me. My sister was sitting in the back of an SUV, with no seatbelt on, and she was thrown from the vehicle 80+ ft. She was in the hospital for a week in a coma before the doctors diagnosed her with having no brain activity, and she was then taken off life support. She was 19 years old.
A couple years before that, I lost an uncle and a friend who were not wearing seat belts.

Princess Diana was killed while riding in the back seat of a car. She was not wearing a seat belt when the vehicle hit the post in the tunnel. The impact sent her flying into the back of the seat in front of her. This did not kill her, instantly. The impact tore her hear loose from the blood vessels. Doctors at the Paris hospital tried to reattach her heart and repair the damage but were too late to save her life.
The only one in the car who survived was her bodyguard, who, incidentally, was the only one in the car wearing his belt.

Depending on your state, you may get pulled over if anyone in the car is not wearing a seatbelt- front or back. If the car crashes, the person could fly through the window.
I guess a good way to put it is that while you can trust your own driver, you can never trust anyone else on the road. You should always wear a seatbelt.

if you have a frontal crash and the rear seat passengers aren't wearing belts they almost always butt heads with the front seat passengers at a high rate of velosity. in fact it in 10-20% of fatal crashes the occupants are not killed by the impact but by flying debris loose inside the car.
