Just as girls prefer taller men, I believe guys prefer shorter women. I'm about average height for a woman (close to 5'7"), though the much taller guys (6' and up) seem to prefer the even shorter girls (5'4" and under). So it affects us girls in that way, too, where us taller girls get overlooked (and I'm not even that tall, though don't forget us women tend to wear heels out -- makes me about 5'10").
If only guys knew how tall women celebrities and models really are -- if they saw those girls in person, towering over them, would they like them as much I wonder?
I just want to add as a note to your guy friend -- CONFIDENCE -- above all else, is super, super attractive to all women. That's the key.

Your friend needs to suck it up and get over it. Plenty of men (we Asians especially) weren't blessed with height. And while biologically and psychologically women prefer taller men due to a sense of protection that ensues, it won't stop short men from having healthy romantic relationships.
So, give him examples of how shorter men have been able to have great relationships. Or just tell him to go after shorter women.
Also, 5'8" is on the lower spectrum of TALL. Your friend isn't short, he's average.
I'm only 5'6" and I'm fine! Though... I've never had a girlfriend... hmm.. you might want to omit this last part when trying to motivate your friend...

I always want my guy to be taller, even if its by an inch, or the same height. I know I probably sound shallow but no guy thats like a foot shorter or so can protect me; much at least.

there are alot more short women, so if he's 5"8 he can find a shorter woman pretty easy. its more awkward for a tall woman to be with a short man, but it shouldnt matter if you like the person. you're the same height sitting down anyway. look at tom cruise and katie holmes, or back when he was with nicole.

Tall women have broad shoulders which are un-feminine. Women around 5'4" or so shouldn't have a problem with your friend. Actually, a lot of amazon women like shorter guys. I've seen 6' women with 5'6" guys. Your friend should be aware of this. Evens everything out.

Yes! i like my girlfriends to be a bit shorter, makes them look up to you and admire you! I think your friend shouldnt worry about his height, from what ive seen most of the hottest girls are a bit shorter and for some reason like to go for shorter guys rather than a tall guy. Im 6ft 4 and that used to really **** me

5'8" and he's worrying? My husband is 5'1" just like me and I'm crazy about him. I never worried about his height. I've dated other guys that were under 5'4" and didn't give it another thought. I've always been wildly attracted to my hubby and if he grew a few inches I wouldn't consider that a plus. BTW I think the sex is better when the person is the same size as you.

Yes, but I'm answering this as a female. I'm 5'8", and it's hard for me to feel truly intimate with shorter men than me unless they're built like athletes. Tall and skinny is fine (and often good!) I dunno why I feel that way -- perhaps because I am very confident, kind of masculine myself in the way I interact with people, carry myself, perform activities. Just being me doesn't do my boys any favours if they're slight and it makes me feel...strange.
For whatever that's worth.
